EmperorGarm [1682299]Okay... I just went through the map a second time and had the entire map highlighted while doing so. It made a huge difference. While scrolling, the items popped out of the screen a lot more as the icons are boxes that are a different shade of blue than the surrounding area. To my surprise, I found an additional three items. A Lollipop, a Jaguar Plushie and one of the Scripts of the Quran. I got through the map pretty quickly and it didn't destroy my eyes while doing so. I didn't expect to find anything, but another three items was nice, and one of them being valuable was even better.

For the record, I'm 10/10 Awareness and do not have the education bonus for another nine days.

I do think that it would be a lot better if the icons were simply larger. I like that there are more items to be found, but straining your eyes and spending 30-45 minutes scrolling through the city is silly.

EDIT: Scrolled through a third time and found an S&W Revolver. The highlighting works well for me. That's all I'm doing for now.

How would one go about highlighting the map?

Yeah i have been trying to get this select all working through ctrl + A and am selecting everything on the page xD Is this what is meant to happen to help find stuff? Since i started highlighting, i haven't found a thing either

Yes. The entire page should be highlighted, and this little tip has helped me find well hidden items that I would have otherwise missed.

I've gone through the map twice more since my last post, nothing new yet, but it's been fewer than 24 hours so no surprise there. Under the old system I was finding items once every few days. Organizing a dozen screen shots to display everything I've found so far.

This is a long post with a dozen screenshots and an explanation of my experience. Hopefully this helps some of you out in finding items.

This is the first item I found. You can't see items unless you're fully zoomed in, or zoomed out by one click. This picture is zoomed out by two clicks...

And this is fully zoomed. It was still hard to pick out while scrolling around on its own.

And this was the third item. All three were found at the same time, as it seems that everyone was given three randomly generated items to start with. This was also the only of the three that was easy to spot, a First Aid Kit. This was a blessing, as I had spent at least half and hour up until this point carefully combing over the city map and my eyes were starting to hurt.

I then read many parts of this thread and read about the highlighting and decided to give it a go. While I didn't expect to find anything, to my surprise, I found three more items on the map. You probably can't tell from the screenshot, but this is a Lollipop. The box the item image is surrounded by is a not only a differet shade of blue, but it's odd shape help it 'pop' out of the page while you're scrolling around.

When I found this item, I decided to show what they looked like both highlighted and unhighlighted. To me, this is a pretty good showing of how effective the highlighting can be because without the highlights, I'm not sure I would have been able to seen this one. On the roof of this building is a Jaguar Plushie.

If you thought that was easy to spot, good on you, but I don't think I would have caught it. Highlighted, on the other hand...

...the image pops out nicely. And to restate, moving the camera around helps the eye notice the irregularity in the shape, probably more than the still image does.

This one I think anyone could have found. This Script of the Quran is mostly a solid block of color at this size and sticks out on its own.

But I found it highlighted. And this was the sixth and final item from my second run. This run, not counting the time I stopped to take the screenshots, took about five minutes. Compared to the 30-45 minutes from the first run, it was a remarkable improvement. I posted here about the results and decided to try one more time.

If memory serves, this was found at the top of the map and I had started in the opposite corner at the bottom. I had zipped through the map pretty quickly compared to the second run and was still able to catch this S&W Revolver.

This one would have been able to be spotted without highlighting, due to the white on the grey, but it was still very easy to spot while highlighted.

I would like to add a speculation. I use a lot of LSD, which gives a "massive" boost to Awareness. I was not expecting to find 7 items in my first three runs. While the first three items were given to everyone, the next four had to be spawned. I'm wondering... are three items the max one can find on a map at any given time, and if so, if you're "due" to find additional items, if they are kept in a spawn queue? All of these items were found in about 2 hours. Days before RESPO was released, my city find dried up entirely and I did not know about the change to this system. I could be enirely wrong, but I'm curious about the circumstances other people had leading up to the RESPO release and the aftermath. Do items build up or do they vanish after a certain amount of time?

Anyways, I hope this helps you all in your city map item hunting. At first I thought I would hate the easter egg-style hunting, but highlighting the screen brings the hunt to a more reasonable amount of time and effort expenditure and I might even enjoy it a little.

I didnt collect an item (AK47u) 2 days ago. I checked 3-4 times dayly and it was there until now... so an item stays on a map for 2 days.
*maybe someone else can confirm this

Edit: I went back again and its there... WTF? I swear it wasnt there the first time I checked. :P

I have been using the "highlight all" trick myself as well. It does help in most cases. But in my opinion it ruins the experience. What is the point in all the graphic improvements etc. if I must stare at a blue screen scrolling for random squares to appear?
At the end I still find the "hidden" items so why make it complicated? They might as well make the items easy to spot (glowing etc.) to save us all from hurting eyes.

When you find an item, do you have to refresh the page or click City link again, or you can continue searching?

I don't know if someone posted it already, but travelng to another city and back will
spawn 1 new item on map. I'm sure for China, but I haven't tried other destinations.

Has anyone found valuable items so far for example boxing gloves?

I found seven items on Wednesday but nothing at all on Thursday; should hopefully find something today.

I just found two more items, bringing my total to 9.

Here is my tip with the blue highlighted map, with it highlighted zoom in and out a few times. The blue goes away quickly and comes back quickly but when its not highlighted you have a chance of seeing the item being highlighted before the map goes highlighted. Which is why i say zoom in and out a few times so you can see if there is any items. I just found two doing that method.
