It doesn't and shouldn't. You probably have some browser issues.
I've got the same problem using Iron(basically Chrome minus Google's tracking scuzware).
If you have an AdBlock addon you can just select "block an ad on this page" and highlight the friends box(that's how I got rid of mine. Fair warning, you need pixel-perfect accuracy to only hide that one box).
