At the bottom of http://www.torn.com/awards.php

As you progress further into the medal line, the ceiling grows but your current position stays the same, this is because the former is calculated from 0 instead of the last time you got that merit. Let's use level as an example.

It shows that my progress is at 96% because it starts counting from level 1 to level 60. Once I reach level 60, it will show the progress as 92% (60/65). This makes the level medal to be always shown in the "Awards you are about to unlock" section, even if I got it 2 minutes ago and it will take me several months to unlock.

If the system were to reset the current position to 0 and use the difference between the last and the next points as ceiling, the "you are about to unlock" text would be more accurate. Using the same example, the system would consider my current level as 3 (current level - level required for last medal, ie, 58 - 55 = 3) and the next point as 5 (next point - previous point, ie, 60 - 55 = 5) and my progress would be 60%. This is a fairly more accurate than 92%, and is less likely to take the space when it's, in reality, going to take me 3 months or more to finally get that medal.

In an ideal world, the system would take into account how long it takes to get the medals, based on several factors such as activity, nerve bar, if in faction, if married, etc, etc, but this is highly impractical. But we can settle for it to not be permanently covered with medals we just got.

Nice idea.

I also wouldn't mind seeing the Rank Medal timer removed completely. You'll always be 1 away, unless you're maxed of course. In either case, it doesn't serve much function as a progress meter.

Level is perhaps a bad example as it's not a linear difficulty for lvl 50, lvl 55, lvl 60 gains so it's nice to have a buffed %age score.

Certainly for linear merits (e.g. most if not all others) like crime, networth, attacks won, etc the proposed %age to next merit would be more applicable.

1.(<next merit> - <current score>) / (<next merit> - <latest achieved merit>)
i.e. (60 - 58) / (60 - 55) = 2 / 5 = 40%
vs existing:

2. <current score> / <next merit>
i.e. 58 / 60 = 97% (note there's no rounding up in TC award %ages - most trivial 'bug' found.

R+

If you want to get fancy (rather than just slight refactoring of the underlying equation) you could have show/hide flags for each of your upcoming merits.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of support for this. I guess there's some people who never check the progress because of how useless it can get the further you are into the game.

I've thought about this long and hard before and to be honest I thought of some reason why it wasn't a completely good idea. Unfortunately I am crazy tired and can't remember what that reason was haa haa. Maybe it should be calculated from zero on some and not others. Either way it's a good idea and you're getting a big fat R+ from me.
