2026 UPDATE:
I wrote this YEARS before there was an API.  Here is a great tool for checking stock

Flower running was my first method of making reliable cash in Torn and I still do it today to avoid buying points off the point market. Below are a list of tips on how to make it more effective and recommendations on how to balance nerve and energy loss.

Dumb questions first: What is the purpose of flower running and why is it a good way to make money?
If you have completed the History educations it will unlock a location in the city called the Museum

  • In the museum you can exchange one of every flower for 10 points OR one of every plushie for 10 points
  • Points get used daily by players so they are always in high demand
  • So flowers are always a good buy low sell high item that doesn't require much watching of the item market

How do you make money flower running?

  • Anyone who can fly should buy flowers or items every time they visit a foreign country
  • Casual fliers just pick up what you can and sell them for small profits
  • If you want to be a professional flower runner for big profits you will need: A PI with an airstrip, a large suitcase, and willing to make at least 2-3 trips a day (Otherwise just flower run casually)
  • Get a Bazaar! (You really don't want to pay item listing fees, list them one at a time in the item market, or search for a trading partner every time you want to sell)
  • Finish the History Courses: If you have a museum converting to points and selling points makes more profit (If you are willing to fly to all locations to get full sets)

What locations make the most profit?

  • To answer this question we have to do some MATHS (I know it's scary, but we can get through it)
  • The answer also fluctuates with the current market prices of flowers so you will need to rework this as prices change

To calculate Travel Time vs Profit I created a Google Spreadsheet and updated it with today's market prices (It's editable by anyone so feel free to play with the numbers - Also have a section for plushies)
KPCSlors Travel Calculator

Formulas for you Math Geeks: (NOTE - I calculated profits per flower / per hour using PI travel times. This way it doesn't matter how many items you can carry and works for everyone)

  • Flower Cost - Market Price = Gross Profit
  • Travel Time x 2 (converted to decimal) = Round Trip Hours
  • Gross Profit / Round Trip Hours = Dollars per hour made per location

Based off of tonight's market prices (September 16, 2014) here are the best and worst locations:Edelweiss = $10,267 Per Flower per hourAfrican Violet = $13,276 Per Flower per hourBanana Orchid = $14,458 Per Flower per hour...Cherry Blossom = $18,121 Per Flower per hourPeony = $18,295 Per Flower per hour

Explained:
Edelweiss is in Switzerland and everyone who goes to rehab snatches up flowers if available. These will always be the worst profits makers.
African Violets may seem like they should be good profits, but the multi's love to hunt in South Africa so there is usually a good supply on the item market.
Banana Orchids, Crocus, and Dhalia's are usually low tier profit makers because the trips are short and preferred for casual flower runners
Cherry Blossom, Peony, and Tribus are usually the top tier profit makers because the trips are longer and require energy sacrifice.

Energy and Nerve:

  • Nerve: Unless you stick to short trips only you will have to sacrifice a lot of nerve to flower run (Sorry just have to accept it)
  • Energy: Assuming you start at 0 energy and have a DP it takes 5 hours to fill up to 150 energy
  • All locations up to Argentina can be made there and back in less than 5 hoursEnergy Loss Locations:
    • Japan: 2hr 38min = 16 min Energy loss (5-10 energy)China: 2hr 49min = 38 min Energy loss (20 energy)UAE: 3hr 10min = 80min Energy Loss (40 energy)South Africa: 3hr 28min = 116min Energy Loss (60 energy)

Energy Loss Tips:

  • For Japan and China you can decide if returning with a full 150e or burning 25e on an attack is more worth while (I suggest do 1 attack)
  • UAE you should definitely do at least one 25e attack (Mug or Leave for Exp) otherwise it's just a waste of energy
  • SA you should hunt - Profits are low, but those hunting honors take years so may as well make a dent every trip

General Tips:

  • SET A TIMER: The whole point of those math calculations is profit per flower per hour assuming
  • CHECK STOCK BEFORE YOU FLY: Always, Always, Always check [staff edit: this link seems to go to a spam site] before you fly. Nothing worse than flowers being out of stock (Update it too while your at it - just a quick copy/paste)
  • DON'T TRAVEL WITH TOO MUCH CASH: Just like I recommended that you mug or leave someone to burn off wasted energy the same will be done to you.
  • DON'T CAMP: Camping is staying in foreign countries for long stretches. Not only will this guarantee you to be mugged, it will stall faction Organized Crimes which annoys your faction leaders, and you will lose a lot of energy.
  • REPEAT: It's never worth it to camp even in South Africa. If you like to hunt fly back and forth to flower run and hunt so you can still train and do crimes in Torn City in between.

B+R nice guide mate

Just one question when you have in that calc the $ per hour is that based on per flower? So obv the more you can carry you would x that? so say Banana orchid is $14,458 at the moment and you can carry 25 of them you would x that?
KPCSlor [1557404]

What I did was calculate Dollars per Hour for one flower using PI flight times as reference. My market totals are a bit outdated, but you can use the spreadsheet to import new total and see what's currently best.

I didn't bother putting in quantity or estimated profits because everyone sells them differently and has different cumber. Wanted to keep is a simple better or worse number.

Make sense?

I still left the calculations as per flower / per hour based on PI travel times, but put a note in

Also added bold titles and real bullets to make it look cleaner

Thanks for the feedback

easy merits for your first 50 flights to each country .. I've just started running flowers but plan to trade first 50 trips into points

Anyone who can fly should buy flowers or items every time they visit a foreign country

Most people should know you need to be level 15+ to travel but I'd add that in anyway.

Mention the different ways to fly as well and perhaps the total trip time to each destination with the various methods to make this more complete

For example (one way)
DestinationStandardPI AirstripWLTBCT
Mexico 0h180h13
Cayman Islands 0h250h18
Canada 0h290h20
Hawaii 1h341h07
UK 1h511h20
Argentina 1h571h23
Switzerland 2h031h28
Japan 2h381h53
China 2h492h01
UAE 3h102h15
Suuth Africa 3h282h29

Energy Loss Tips:

You can add in revives as well. Switch on the travel chat - there are often people in other destinations that you are headed to looking for revives or just revive anyone that's in hospital. Good way to work on reviving merits as well.

Otherwise, decent guide for those that need to know

Another tip you could add is the CityWatch app, as an alternative to a timer. It has a "Destination Reached" alert and there's a version for Android on the forums (but you need to buy CityWatch in the Points Market first). R+

I like this guide. Rated +

I would like to add that trips to the Cayman Islands also add the benefit of being able to directly bank your excess money. It won't make you as much as a trip to UAE or SA but it's very convenient.
Scalper [1881722]

I would add the obvious.

Always burn your E and Nerve down to a level that it will be refreshed by the time you can use it again.

Some people don't do that - but nerve is always worth using up before you travel.
