I looked into being a freeman on the land, but then you can't keep your passport and that makes travel rather impossible...
Strictly speaking, "freeman" constituted both freed slaves, their descendants, and in certain areas, "mulattos". Depends on the area in question.

also in the mid 90s there was a cult in montana that called themselves freeman if i remember it right... they had a standoff with FBI...
