After reading the thread about weather torn is still relevant I began thinking about a torn app. I'm assuming this has been discussed plenty of times but I just want to see for myself.
Do you think there should be a torn app? and before you all say "just use your phones internet you lazy pleb" I'm not talking about ease of use. I'm wondering about it from a marketing perspective. As a new player I found torn through a website but it was the first time I had ever seen an add for torn and I have been using the internet for at least 8 Years I can remember which is showing to me that this game isn't getting the publicity it deserves (I'm hooked since finding it)
I personally think that a torn app would boost the player base massively as if everyone who plays torn downloaded the app when it came out it would jump to the top charts and get a massive amount of advertisement.
Firstly, I think it's "whether" not "weather". (No offense) :P Secondly, I personally think having a torn app would be great but I'm pretty sure that's gonna kill the torn city watch app. Still a good idea though, may be they should launch it and make it exchangeable with point by replacing it with TC watch. :)
The likily bump in the player base could be compelling enough to explore some sort of torn app; however, the mobile configuration option available when using your phone kills the need for an app in my mind.
I don't know if the effort to develop a mobile platform app would be worth it considering all the other things on the "to-do list" for the devs.
I seem to remember that there was chatter about a possible app some years ago. Ched shot down the idea expressing that it would be too difficult to have the app interlink with the browser site, and that even if they could it would have an increased risk of bug abuse/possible broken features.
Anyway since respo the mobile site is pretty good, I have it saved to my home screen and treat it like an app.
We could have an application where you're instantly logged in to the game and it'd provide the same notifications that the desktop citywatch provides. As for the actual game, it'd perhaps just appear in a custom 'Torn' browser. I.e. It'd be exactly the same as viewing Torn in your standard mobile browser, but perhaps without the URL bar e.t.c.
Anything more advanced than that seems a bit pointless to me, and very expensive.
I expect for the simple scenario, it'd cost around $5,000 - $7,000 and it would be immoral to charge people for it. I'm not really sure if it'd be something that people would use - when they can have a pretty much identical experience simply using their browser.
Well. I don't know if you mean Torn App as a app launched officially by torn for its players. Maybe you mean that.
Coz else, there used to be an app on Google Play from BMINC if I remember the name correctly. They have pulled it down right now for some reason which I dont know. But there used to be an app for Torn.
Only being it wasnt from Torn but BMINC which i think is a third party.
I don't mean for functionality which I did try to point out but I mean for a marketing point, like ched said even a simpler version that basically just links you to the internet site would be enough for an app to be on the market and could possibly bring in a new player base who haven't seen anything to do with torn as of yet and would love to play it if they knew about it.
I'm sure you know the figures and the specifics, but I am quite baffled by your response.
The app world is huge right now and games like candy crush etc are making a killing. You're not willing to spend a few thousand dollars to get your app in the games section of the app store? Free to play section and everything.
Seems a bit odd to me, the idea is that most people who wouldn't consider logging into a browser game, will play it for convenience and to pass time whilst on their phone.
Am I missing something here?
Edit: Again, unless I'm missing the point, you don't have to charge your app, you just have to get people drawn in enough that they start paying a very reasonable price for a DP?
I think the appeal of an app is the potential for notifications, not for improved gameplay - the mobile site is terrific. But when I'm away from my laptop (and City Watch) and I land in Switzerland, I need to know *NOW* or else I might get mugged ;p
Yes, but that's only through his lack of will to invest.
Either way, having it on the appstore surely has its benefits, I don't know many people who google 'text based games' to play anymore to market torn, but I know a lot who skim trough multiplayer game apps on the appstore and the like.
There are plenty of websites that have apps and apps that have websites, plenty of games.
This is one of the reasons I'm so confused to the resistance to it. You can browse features available on the internet on an app, they're not mutually exclusive.
When our budget can accommodate it, and we can find the right team to take on this task, I have no doubt we will pursue this. I just wanted to make it clear that it wouldn't be the whole of Torn rebuilt to work as an application, but rather the website which runs through the app's own browser. With the added bonuses of instant login after tapping the application icon, and notifications.
Get yourself a torn app, as someone who very much dislikes phones even I would benefit from it, it opens doors into a huge space in terms of advertisement and market place - even the suggested 5-7k is nothing in comparison to the benefits (more so than facebook) on market place alone.
