Microsoft force-fed an update to all current Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users with valid, legit licenses to reserve their copy of Windows 10.

I, for one, am excited. Windows 10 should be great, and it's supposed to be the last Windows ever, as everything in the future will build off it through updates and upgrades.

If you have a legit Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 install, then Windows 10 is yours for free. If not, you'll need to buy it eventually. NewEgg leaked a release date of August 31, and prices of $100 for Home and $150 for Pro.

People are going to be annoyed if the windows icon and notification stays for three months

According to microsoft:

When you reserve, you can confirm your device is compatible with Windows 10. Between reservation and when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly. Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade.

Why dont I have the Get Windows 10 app?

If you dont see the Get Windows 10 app on your PC, it might be because:
  1. Your device isnt up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
  2. Windows Update is turned off or is not set to received updates automatically.
  3. Youve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
  4. Your device is not running genuine Windows.

I thought most people knew about the fact the upgrade was free - there was hardly any need to give a perm icon with an update.. god knows why but i'm used to having 3 icons show... 4 just makes me sad :(

win10 any good?

the problem with the free upgrade is that if its buggy or doesnt work when installed, you are going to have a rought time resetting to win7 uinless you have the required system disks and/or knowledge base to recover your system.

personnally i have both BUT i will wait til the first updates/ SP's are availible to iron out the bugs before trying it out. I cant be bothered with the time wasting and teethgrinding that always comes with a new OS

I'm actually looking forward to it, i wont instantly "upgrade" i'll most likely give it 6 months or so and check back to the state it's in - it'll most likely be buggy but that's expected - worst comes to worst i'll just put both OS on my computer and when w10 can't do anything just go back to w7

There is no stable edition for Win10. If you are using your computer as a professional in your life or expert level individual user, you must wait until Windows updates came. They couldn't fix some critical bugs in 8.1, this is why they bring you to 10. As a Mac user, I can say that you must use Windows 7 which is the best OS of Windows operating systems. Not only 8 but also 10 cannot reach the level of Win7.

For those who can't bear to be reminded until the release, you can get rid of the icon.

Go to Windows Update->Installed update, remove KB3035583. Also, you need to hide the update again in windows updates to prevent it from auto installing again since this is marked important

Don't forget to put it back later when you want to proceed!

windows OS are kind'a hit and miss ... the track record isn't very good so considering my Win 7 is running quite well i'm reluctant to jump on the free upgrade bandwagon

Micro$oft has an on and off pattern of suckiness...

Windows 2000 - Good
Windows ME - Bad
Windows XP - Good
Windows Vista - Bad
Windows 7 - Good
Windows 8 - Bad
Windows 10 - Good...?

if your memory only goes that far back then consider yourself lucky :)

imo win 2000 wasn't that good either ... i milked 98SE as far as i could
