My suggestion starts with an analogy, so bear with me
Recently, empty blood bags were introduced. Purchase one and take an education course, then the empty blood bag can be altered or filled with your type blood. If your blood type is A+ like mine and you fill a bunch of bags (assuming there will eventually be an honor or merit since its now being counted in personal stats), youll have a stack of Blood Bag : A+, and a stack of the Empty Blood Bags. If you are a collector/hoarder of many items (like me), that works out fine, you can buy a stack of each type blood for your collection. Makes sense, right?

See how my A+ blood bag stack and my empty blood bag stack make the medical section of my display nice and tidy?
Now on to my actual suggestion:
According to Ched, All newly added weapons / armour is now displayed individually, just like on the items list. This is so we can store and display unique data (coming soon).
If the unique data for weapons means they will be alterable items, much like the empty blood bags, why should they not stack if the altered item is identical to another altered item, much like my stack of A+ blood bags?
Heres a screen shot of part of the melee weapon section of my display, also nice and tidy.

My issue started this morning when I added some new baseball bats to my display

Alterable items that have yet to be altered, much like empty blood bags, but these dont stack.
My suggestion, is to make the unaltered items stack and identical altered items stack so I could have the following stacks in the melee weapon section:
Stack 1: Baseball Bat (original unaltered item)
Stack 2: Baseball Bat : 10 Nails (or whatever clever name they end up with)
Stack 3: Baseball Bat : Barbed Wire (with a different clever name)
Instead of having 5 pages of unaltered baseball bats, 2 pages of baseball bats with nails, and yet another page of baseball bats with barbed wire.
