Apology/Suggestion to DARK MODE users - I am sorry if you need or prefer to play TORN in Dark Mode because it makes this Guide difficult to read - particularly the Dark Blue text. I recommend that you either switch to NORMAL MODE while reading, or, as suggested by bburton [3836878], while in DARK MODE simply select the text as you would to copy it and the blue text will turn white, making it easier to read. I would like one day to re-edit it to make it suitable for Dark Mode users, but I can make no promises that it will definitely happen. This Guide was created before Dark Mode existed.

TESLA'S GUIDE TO FAST-TRACKING THE CITY CAREERS

There are three Parts to this Guide and a lot of information, but dont worry - ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO USE THIS GUIDE IS IN PART 1 everything else is just details and some suggestions of how to approach completing the City Jobs. So when you reach the RED TEXT you've read as much as you need.

For those of you who want more detail and context then you may also want to read some or all of Part 2 (which adds a little more detail and suggests ways to proceed). The least useful section is Part 3 (which is just the simple sums to show how the fast-track stats were worked out) but is included in case anyone wants to check for mistakes.

But if all you want is the bare details of what the City Careers are and how you can complete them in the quickest time, then all you need to read is Part 1.

This guide is aimed at new players although there is some information that may be useful for older players that have yet to complete all the city careers. PLEASE ADD YOUR COMMENTS AND POINT OUT ANY MISTAKES OR WAYS TO IMPROVE THIS GUIDE. IF YOU LIKE THIS GUIDE PLEASE ADD A 'BUMP' COMMENT AS WELL AS AN UPRATE TO HELP KEEP IT NEAR THE TOP OF THE GUIDES

PART 1 Fast Tracking The City Jobs The nuts and bolts

Why do I care about City Jobs?

Firstly, there are 6 City careers but you need only really care about completing 4 of them (Casino and Grocer are the ones that don't need to be completed). The main reason for completing the other City Careers is to get the perks that reaching the Top Tier role provide. Of the 4 important careers 3 of these perks are 'passive perks' which means you don't have to do anything to activate them, they are there in the background helping you without having to do anything. In addition these particular passive perks remain with you for ever even when you leave the career to work somewhere else.

The perks are:

  • Education: Reaching the role of Principal gives the cheat sheet which permanently reduces your college education study time for every course by 10%. Additionally, by spending 55 merits on the Education merit track you can boost this to a total 30% reduction. The entire college syllabus entails a total of over 7 real life years so obtaining that 30% reduction can save you over 2 real life years of study time. There are some amazing benefits for completing many courses so the sooner you complete them the better. There is also a merit for completing each Bachelor. See the Illusionist's [253384] great guide to Education Study Perks for more info on what you can get out of studying. It might help you realise you need to work on reducing your study time sooner than you think.

  • Medical: Reaching the role of Brain Surgeon gives you the revive skill which permanently enables you to get people out of hospital (for 75 energy). Players will often pay for you to revive them. There are merits for reviving 500 and 1000 players. Later you may also want to go back to this career and steal 500 items for that merit too, but if you are fast-tracking then using Job points to steal items is a waste. This merit should be sought much later in your Torn life when you are struggling to obtain merits and you certainly shouldnt spend job points to steal items until after you have reached the role of Brain Surgeon.

  • Law: Reaching the role of Federal Judge gives you a permanent 10% increase in crime success. There will be many changes when Crimes 2.0 is implemented but we don't yet know when that update is due (Now implemented with limited crimes accessible - as of July 2023 - see next paragraph). Under the current system it is probably worthwhile obtaining this perk as soon as you can. If you aim to get the 9 merits for the 8N drug deals crimes (8 drug transport medals + 1 Crime Award) this perk should reduce the number of reds you have to endure while seeking these merits. Many players choose to avoid the 9 merits available altogether and opt to protect their CE instead. Its up to you but if you decide to get them, it is probably best to get them before you have a NNB of 45 (the smaller your NNB the better in fact) but I recommend after you have been a Federal Judge. (In addition to the Federal Judge always buy the Crime Enhancer for whatever crime you are attempting. Also completing the Psychology bachelor gives another 10% boost to crime success but there are other bachelors you should probably do before Psychology). Getting a job in a 10star pub or similar company is also recommended if going for these 9 merits. For further detailed help on crimes and your Nerve bar you should read Nash's Guide to Nerve Bar - a very helpful Guide (which is now gone) Handsome Pants Crime Merits and Owen's Crime Guide have replaced Nash's Guide.

Crimes 2.0
- now available as an option to the original 'Crimes 1.0' crime system. It's optional because only limited crimes are available. However, once you make the move to Crimes 2.0 the Crimes 1.0 system is no longer accessible to you (so racking up Crime Experience through e g. Warehouse Arsons becomes temporarily impossible). Crimes are being introduced 1 by 1 starting with an update to the 2N crime Searching For Cash. Comprehensive guides are being produced by Emforus for each crime. So far Emforus has produced Guides for 2N Searching for Cash, 2N Bootlegging, 3N Graffiti and 4N Shoplifting. All are clear comprehensive and helpful. Be aware that other Guides by other people are being produced for crimes or for specific features of a crime. For example g|l1tchh produced this Guide to obtaining the Notorious merit, within the 4N Shoplifting crime. New Guides for Crimes 2.0 are likely to appear as new crimes are being introduced. If you have moved over to Crimes 2.0, you will be doing yourself a favour if you use any and all of Emforus' guides as well as other specific issues guides such as the one by g|litchh.

  • Army: Reaching the role of General gives you a perk that enables you to spy on another player's stats for 10 Army points and $5,000. However, the earlier Job Specials that allow you to spend Army points to improve your Defence and Strength are more important initially. You still need to reach the role of General before using those perks however as you will need a minimum of 1000 Army points (100 days as a General) to get the benefit of this perk for boosting your Defence. For boosting Strength you need to accumulate even more points than that. These Defence/Strength perks are best used by players who know that they are going to be inactive for a long period. For active players there are better ways to improve Defence and Strength that don't involve the Army at all. For details on how to get the most out of Army points to boost either Defence or Strength see Maledicts [1677916] amazing Army guide here:

Unlike the 3 careers above, the Army perks are NOT passive - you need to be in the Army to be able to use any of the Army perks.

What minimum starting stats do I need to "Fast-Track" each job?

  • The city Education career can be fast-tracked in 26 days if you enter this career with a minimum Intelligence of 4365, Manual of 1252 and Endurance of 1236

  • You can fast-track the city Medical career in 26 days if you enter with a minimum Intelligence of 9378, Endurance of 3673 and Manual of 2316

  • The city Army career can be fast-tracked in a minimum of 41 days by entering the career with a minimum Manual of 9262, Endurance of 3603 and Intelligence of 1674

  • You can fast-track the city Law career in 21 days if you enter with a minimum Endurance of 14350, Intelligence of 8485 and Manual of 5560

The Grocer and the Casino are mentioned next for completion but ironically, although they are the easiest to complete I'd recommend doing these after you have completed the other 4 careers (if at all - there is no reason to do them except because you want to). If you read on you will see the suggestion that you join a player-owned company for a while instead of sitting out either of these (or any of the others 4 city careers for that matter) because you can boost your work stats more quickly and some of the player-owned company perks are awesome.

  • You can fast-track the city Grocer career in 16 days if you enter with a minimum Endurance of 372, Intelligence of 149 and Manual of 158.

  • The city Casino career can be fast-tracked in 21 days if you enter with a minimum Endurance of 3842, Intelligence of 928 and Manual of 629.

How can I get those minimum stats as quickly as possible?

  • In general the quickest way to get those minimum stats is by joining a player-owned company with as many stars as possible. You need to be a level 3 or above player to be an employee of a player-owned company. Player-owned companies give you daily working stat boosts but in addition the company owner (the Director) can train you for additional boosts to your stats. The number of stars a company has dictates how many trains a Director can spend on his employees, so the more stars the better.

  • If you can't get back in to a company that you like or that offers enough stat boosts then staying in the Education City career once you have reached Principal is your next best option as the perks also allow you to use job points to boost stats pretty considerably (a 100 point increase for 10 job points). By spending Education Job Points you can increase all 3 stats by 55 to 60 each day. It is worth being aware that with Education (and all City Careers) you get a boost to ALL THREE work stats every day. In player-owned companies only 2 out of your 3 work stats get an increase.

  • MONEY TALKS! THE FASTEST WAY however is to PAY A COMPANY OWNER to employee you and USE ALL OR AS MANY COMPANY TRAINS AS YOU CAN AGREE ON to train you more often than you would otherwise receive as an employee. Most players can't afford to do this unless they donate a lot or have friends who are billionnaires in Torn and can lend or give them lots of cash. This method is THE FASTEST POSSIBLE WAY to boost work stats. How much a player pays and how many Trains per day/week he or she gets in return is something he or she needs to negotiate with the Director of the company will be employed by.

  • Additionally, some player-owned company perks are only available when a company has reached a given number of stars. Check out company specials (that link still works but this wiki on companies has more up-to-date specials and some company types that have been added more recently) to help you decide which company type you want to join (hint: companies that give energy for job points are useful for players wanting to get to level 15 as quickly as possible especially if they cant afford to get drugs and points to boost training gains). If you have the time, inclination and ability to plan things down to the day then check out Accurate's (previously aka Spades) [1758158] Company Comparison Guide in particular Document 3. In addition to company specials it tells you the working stat gain for each role within each company type. You may find it a bit detailed for the purpose for fast-tracking your City career/s. Still, once you have finished your City Careers, this Company Comparision Guide Document will be just what you need if you want to really plan your remaining employment future as you move through Torn City companies - as employee or Director!

Job Points (JPs) and Job Specials

Every day while you are in either a career or a player-owned company you get Job Points. While fast-tracking the City Careers it's important that you DON'T SPEND any job points until you reach the Top Tier role as this will slow your fast-track down. While you are in a player-owned company you can spend them whenever you want. Also remember that you never lose Job Points if you change jobs. When you go back to that same career or same kind of company any Job Points you accumulated will be there. So don't feel like you have to spend them just because you are changing jobs.

The City Careers have some interesting and useful Job Specials that you can use once you have reached the Top Tier role in a career (especially the Army) but some of the Job Specials for the player-owned companies are massively awesome in comparison. Check the company specials and/or Document 3 of the Company Comparison Guide links in the last bullet point above to see what the different companies can do for you.

So in essence, thats all you need to know to fast-track through the city careers

If you want more detail and context on any of the above read on further points of relevance as well as a breakdown of the data given above.

PART 2 Fast Tracking The City Jobs More detail and some suggestions

Everything you need to know about fast-tracking the City Careers is in Part 1. You don't need to read this section unless you have a particular interest in this area of the game or would like more detail and more advice on how to use the City Careers.

The City Jobs

There are six city careers. Each has its benefits and there are good reasons for completing each career at some point in your Torn Life (except perhaps Grocer and Casino, which need only be completed because you want to have done them all for your own reasons they wont help you in any way. You DON'T even get a merit for completing all 6 careers) . And to be honest, I would suggest that some should be completed sooner rather than later. (EDIT*** SINCE I FIRST WROTE THIS GUIDE THERE HAS SINCE BEEN SOME DISCUSSION, STARTED BY STAFF, ABOUT PROVIDING A MERIT FOR THIS (and a range of other things) BUT THAT STARTED 4 YEARS AGO AND STILL THERE IS NO MERIT FOR COMPLETING ALL CITY CAREERS ***EDIT)

Of the 6 city careers there are only 3 that you can enter into as a new player with low work stats. These are the casino, the army and the grocer. Which one you should join is pretty much a moot point as hopefully you wont be there very long as you will be trying to get in to a player-owned company as soon as you are level 3. Its good to join one of course because there is no guarantee you will find a company you like or who likes you as soon as you hit Level 3.

I think that it is probably best to choose between the Casino and the Grocer because they pay better than the Army and because you will hopefully fast-tracking through the Army not long after you finish your Education career.

There are many arguments against what I am going to suggest in a moment and you need to decide what is best for your character and his/her Torn life.

What I suggest you do is, as soon as is possible, complete the Education career. But that doesnt mean joining it right now. No, you will need to work for a player-owned company first. Why? To get the working stats you need in order to join and Fast Track through the Education career. The player-owned companies tend to offer much higher daily working stat increases and also the company owner (the Director) can train you each week to add even more to your working stats. You need to find a company with as high a number of stars as you can. The more stars a company has mean more Job Points each day, more and better job specials AND more training sessions the Director can give his or her employees each week.

What are working stats?

These are your Intelligence, Endurance and Manual stats and relate entirely to your job and your ability to do it. Increasing them enables entry and promotion in the City careers. The city careers and many player-owned companies require minimum work stats for them to employ you. Companies and careers are different by the way one is owned by the game the other is actually owned by another person who plays the game. In a city career your working stats go up by a small amount each day but each stat gets a boost. In a player-owned company the stat increases are much greater (usually) but only two of your three working stats receive a boost. After a while in a company you may need to ask your Director to put you in another role to give the other stat a boost. Ideally though, both roles should boost your Intelligence so that you can get into the city Education career as soon as possible.

Whats the big deal about the Education career?

Well, when you reach the role of Principal you earn the Cheat Sheet perk which reduces all study time in the college by 10%. This combined with spending 55 merits (I would suggest your first 55 merits) to fill the Education merit track which adds a further 20% reduction to study time, will decrease your REAL TIME (i.e. the time it takes in real life) study in the school by over 2 YEARS. Instead of it taking 7 YEARS it will only take 5 YEARS. Torn is a marathon of a game and requires long range planning. If you hadnt realised that before, hopefully what you just read has brought that home. Getting some of those Education skills, perks and bonuses will seriously enhance your characters abilities, so the sooner you get many of them the better.

In addition, the Job Specials for Education each enable you to boost your working stats significantly and quickly so once the top role has been achieved it might be worth remaining in the Education for a little while longer. However, it is usually better that you find a company that has decent Job Specials, and gives good working stat increases too. If you can't get in to a player-owned company or into one that offers decent enough perks an stat boosts then remaining in the Education career is probably your next best option.

Whether you remain in Education or go back to your old company or join a new one is up to you. Some company job specials are so useful it can be a difficult decision to leave them. One reason you might want to leave is to fast-track though the Army career in order to spend the next 3 months, or 6 months or year as a General.

But, just because you are thinking long term, marathon style doesnt mean there isnt sense in fast-tracking things where you can.

What was that about companies and why are they important to me?

In addition to the city careers there are dozens of different company types owned by hundreds of players. It isnt possible to join one of these companies until you reach Level 3 though. For new players with low working stats, the companies generally give you higher working stat boosts each day than the city careers and you also get bonus work stat boosts a few times each week by being trained by your company Director (who is the company owner). Thats why, on the way to completing the Education career you need to work for a good company.

What is a good company

A good company is one with as many stars as you can find that will let you join. The type of company you join is very much your choice and you need to read all about them and the specials they give you before you commit to joining one. Companies have between 1 and 10 stars. Companies have 5 Job Specials which are unlocked for employees as the number of stars increases. Specials are unlocked at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 stars. The number of stars is also how many job points you get per day. You can spend job points on the job specials so the more the better. You can look at the list of company types here:

Its worth being aware that most companies don't pay enough for you to live on and you very much have to remain active in trading and traveling (Level 15 and higher) in order to fund your Torn life. There are 3 company types that do make a lot of money but these all require very high working stats for each role in the company and they generally only employ players who have played the game long enough to build high enough working stats.

Conclusion

So that's it. Hopefully you now understand working stats if you didn't already and hopefully you have some ideas about how you may go about improving them. More importantly you should have an idea of, or at least be thinking about, how and when you should be changing your job to improve you characters abilities and skills.

GOOD LUCK!

Part 3 Breaking down the numbers

This section shows how the numbers work to demonstrate the fast-track of each City Career.

Education.
Primary stat is Intelligence, The Top role, Principal requires Intelligence of 5000, while the other 2 stats both need to be 1500.

This city job can be fast-tracked in 26 days - by spending the minimum of 1 day in the 1st role and 5 days in the 2nd,3rd, 4th,and 5th and 6th role. The most important Stat is Intelligence.

To summarise, you need to enter this career with an Intelligence of 4365, Manual of 1252 and Endurance of 1236.

Fast-Track in the Education career.
Intelligence

1 x 10 = 10
5 x 15 = 75
5 x 20 = 100
5 x 25 = 125
5 x 30 = 150
5 x 35 = 175
Total = 635

A start Intelligence of 4365 will be at 5000 after the 26 days required to build up the necessary job points and the few remaining stat points required for promotion.

Manual

1 x 8 = 8
5 x 13 = 65
5 x 15 = 75
5 x 20 = 100

Total = 248 (Your Manual needs to be at 1500 by this point)
1500-248 = 1252

5 x 25 = 125
5 x 30 = 150

Total = 523

In the Education career your Manual needs to reach its max (1500) by the 4th role. So although this job requires 26 days to fast-track a starting Manual of 1252 will be at 1500 after 16 days (1 day in the first role and 5 days in the 2nd 3rd and 4th roles. You will spend a further 5 days each in the 5th and 6th role but these arent relevant to your Manual requirements, but you need to hit those ranks for the increase in job points which will enable you to promote every 5 days.

Endurance
1 x 9 = 9
5 x 14 = 70
5 x 17 = 85
5 x 20 = 100

Total = 264 (Your Endurance needs to be at least 1500 from this point on)
1500-264=1236

5 x 25 = 125
5 x 30 = 150
Total = 539

A starting Endurance of 1236 will be at 1500 after 16 days 1 day in the first role and 5 days in the 2nd 3rd and 4th roles (You need 1500 Endurance by this point). You will spend a further 5 days in the 5th role and 6th roles but these arent relevant to your Endurance requirements but you need to hit those roles for the job points to enable a speedy promotion.

Army
The primary stat for this career is Manual. To be accepted for promotion into the Top Tier rank of General requires Manual of 10,000, Endurance of 4,000 and Intelligence of 2000. Being a General allows you to produce 'spy' reports on other players' stats at a cost of 10 Army Job points, however, unlike all other Top Rank skills/perks, the Army Spying ability is lost once the player leaves the Army.

The Army job specials that allow for boosting of strength and defence are the main reason people enter this career. Generals earn 10 job points per day.

Fast-Track through the Army

5 x 8 = 40
5 x 12 = 60
5 x 17 = 85
5 x 20 = 100
5 x 24 = 120
5 x 28 =140
5 x 33 = 165
Total = 738

A starting Manual of 9262 will be at 10,000 after 41 days (1 day in the first role, 5 days per role in the 2nd to the 9th roles as required to build up job points and work stats needed for each promotion.)

1 x 2 = 2
5 x 3 = 15
5 x 5 = 25
5 x 7 = 35
5 x 10 = 50

Intelligence
1 x 1 = 1
5 x 2 = 10
5 x 3 = 15
5 x 4 = 20
5 x 7 = 35
5 x 9 = 45
5 x 10 = 50
5 x 12 = 60

Good Guide, especially for new players .

Rated +

PS:In my opinion it is better to avoid capitalizing entire title
NikolaTesla [1631174]

Yeah, will change that - it doesn't fit in the space for one thing. But I guess your right, looking at the others, it looks better when not all caps.
Chuckyboy2 [1875579]

I'm not rating either way right now because there is some misinformation and I'm not understanding some reasoning. Overall it's a good to follow and I really agree about education.

Misinfo -not accounting for the 5 points originally given when starting a job. This results in 5 less days needed for each job and a different total starting point for starting a job

No mention of paying for trains- or least what I saw. This is best method for obtaining the stats. To me your guide should center around this and give price points and ways to do this effectively. It's also much better to pay for trains than the education principal trading points in.

My nitpick point- I understand the title of the guide but I see no point in doing casino job or grocer job esepecially when you say join a company to get stats (which I agree with). You give reasons why the other 4. I just would discourage anyone from ever going into these jobs other than affronted merit but this is very nit picky.

NikolaTesla [1631174]

It's been so long since I started one of these careers that I can't remember the issue of the starting points. I'll have to look into it and re-do the values so that it's correct. It's only 5 points but it's an important point given that it's central to what the guide aims to do. I'm pretty surprised that all careers give 5 points on that first day. I do need to get this straightened out.

As for your other points I felt that I had pretty clearly stated that the Casino and Grocer are only included for completion and are not particlularly useful. The statement that they should be done after the other 4 takes into account (but doesn't state) that by the time a player has reached that point they will know if and when they even want to do those careers. I also state that it might be worth staying in Education but that equally a company may be found that can offer the stat gains the player wants.

I'll look over the wording again when I have time to see if I can be clearer or more exlpicit about that.

The main point is about the stat requirements for fast-tracking the city careers with some advice about how the stats can be obtained but it purposefully tries to leave it at a point where decisions about how this can done are left for the player to investigate for themselves. Or something like that.

Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately it may be a while before I can look into sorting the issues you raised out.

R+, but I think you can provide the same info in a much shorter format for more impact. You really just need a few Q/A-style bulletpoints:

1) Why do I care about City Jobs?
A: Perks! Add some detail here but imo you really provide too much info and get off-topic at times above.
2) What minimum starting stats do I need to "Fast-Track" each job?
A: See your summary and Appendix 2. I think this is where the real value of this guide is.
3) Why do I want to do that?
A: To gain the passive perks and then get back into a company for other perks and better pay.
3) How can I get those minimum stats as quickly as possible?
A: Get trained in a company!

All in all, with a little cleanup I think this Guide can be a staple for new players, well done.

Good guide, but man that wall of text really puts me off somehow.

It's really good but I'd try to get alot more structure in it, use bigger spacing, more obvious seperations etc. Because ALOT of players won't bother to read it due to the fact it's just a big wall.

R+

edit:

E.g: Use colours / bigger fonts etc :)
NikolaTesla [1631174]

and @ HandsomePants

OK. So I tried to acknowledge that there was a lot of text and that a lot of it wasn't necessary to read unless you wanted to - and I know that there is a section of the Torn population that do want the details so that's why I included them.

In the first section I tried to do that by saying that reading the introductory Summary is all you really need to read.

But from your reaction (and others) it seems I somehow failed to get that across.

I will work on it.

On the whole see reply to Harley, above.

But your point about less is more (i.e being shorter for greater impact) is a key one.

But maybe one way round is to gerate the brief bullet pointed version you suggest (which is what this Guided started out to be) and then conclude that with an more explicitly optional Apendix which would include a section which could basically be somethig similar to the report as it turned out. Like I have said, some people do want the details.

Personally I would want it to include as a mimium

What the city careers are and whate their perks are
the starting stats for city careers,
the reason the Education career is so important (although I recognise that this is my personal opinion),
using a company to boost stats to reach entry to Education

After that - company perks, Army Perks etc are potential subjects but are really the domain of the player's own preferences and objectives so it's difficult to know what to put in and what leave out.

As already stated, I'll work on it...
TankTyson [1950202]

Thank you for putting the time to make this. It will be very useful for me as I am just starting out my adventure in Torn. Now to find that company to hire me and get me all trained!! R+
NikolaTesla [1631174]

Thanks. There are a few amendments/suggestions not yet made that may be useful.

A popular one being that you can pay a company Director to give you more trains per week than you migh otherwise receive.
NikolaTesla [1631174]

OK, so apologies for taking so long in making the amendments you pointed out. I've finally done that and have cut a lot out and hopefully emphasised the fact that ony Part 1 is needed enough to not put people off with the amount of text there is in total.

Thanks for pointing out the error, the fundamental error, about those origianl 5 job points. It's been a bit of a mare getting it straightened out but hopefully it's correct.

I've mentioned the issue of paying for trains but not price points as I didn't know what to suggest as I didn't use this method.
NikolaTesla [1631174]

It's been re-jigged and hopefully the emphasis that PArt 1 is all that is needed will avoid putting to many readers off.

Still, I'm happy to edit further if anyone thinks I need to.

Would really like a suggestion on ways to encourage players to add a comment to keep it bumped too.

Thanks for your input, and apologies for taking so long to get it editied.
NikolaTesla [1631174]

It's taken me a while to find the time to edit this Guide. It's still pretty lengthy but is definitely shorter with an emphasis early on that only Part 1 needs to be read to hopefully encourage players to use it.

If you have any ideas of how I could include something that would lead anyone using it to add a comment to keep it bumped that would be great.

Thanks for your input HP.
