So I'm currently reading "The Demon-Haunted World" by Carl Sagan, And it got me thinking about the "fake" sciences, or to e more specific, science where any evidence against it is ignored, where the scientific method is also ignored and follows are encouraged to "believe" rather than actually scientifically test it.
So I'm wondering if anyone here has any experiance on this subject, Or just out of interest, If anyone has any thoughts about it.
Indeed, you must follow the scientific method, PLUS, your experiment (if they are truly scientific and not only serendipity) they must be repeatable. Trust always peer reviewed journals and not just some science section of yahoo or other websites
It makes you wonder how history would have turned out if the scientific method was the basis of human belief, If say from an early stage it was adopted by major human belief systems.
The world could be so much difference.
What do you consider religion and is it related to this? I've had a falling out from religion in the past few years and it all sounds like rubbish when you take a third person view
I'd be quite hesitant in going straight off and classing it as a pseudoscience, Not for any scientific reasons, But for the simple fact that it'd seem like an attack on peoples beliefs and that tends to become an unreasonable argument rather than a discussion.
But some aspects, Of some religions (Just to cover myself), Could easily be classified as a pseudoscience, The emphases on belief, the lack of reason, The punishments for not believing, the nature to disregard and repress scientific information, And so on.
And pseudoscience does always sound like rubbish to those outside of it, those who do not believe in it, but the issue is the people who do believe fervently in it.
Reminds me of Mulder and Scully. I want to believe :P
I'm an administrator and editor at a wiki which covers pseudoscience and the anti-science movement (
www.rationalwiki.org). Also, I just recently submitted my first article to
Skeptic Magazine on the topic of cannabis as an alternative medicine (fingers crossed!). I've always been fascinated with pseudoscience and have a lot of contempt for its purveyors, particularly quacks and scammers like Deepak Chopra, Kevin Trudeau, and Rick Simpson who promote dangerous and fraudulent pseudomedicine.
Debunking pseudoscience is like whack-a-mole. Carl Sagan often said that it's impossible to ever be completely rid of psudoscientific thinking. But trying to dispel every new bogus and unsupported claim as it rears its ugly head is still a fun and worthwhile exercise.

Pseudoscience and those who practice can be quite interesting in fairness they'd need to be, But at least reality has the scientific method to handle these..
Sagan is probably right there, But at least we; As umans, Have the tools to dispel them.
