So as I have said a few times I'm Irish and we Irish have a lot of "local legends" , one of the most famous is kissing the Blarney Stone, tourists come from everywhere to kiss this stone, the legend around it started around 1000 years ago the builder of Blarney Castle had a court case and appealed to Cliodhna (a Celtic goddess) and she told him to kiss the first stone he found in the morning on the way to court and after kissing it he was able to plead his case eloquently and got off due to the stone giving the ability to deceive convincingly so then he built the castle he put that exact stone into the walls and now people kiss it for luck but if the story holds true they are actually kissing it to give them the ability to lie effectively or, as we Irish call it, "The gift of the gab"

The Blarney Stone

We also have another called "The Hellfire club", this one is more sinister

This was a hunting lodge built in 1725 by a guy called William Conolly apparently on an ancient Irish burial ground, it was apparently haunted by a huge black cat and the people meeting there were known for orgies and burning people as sacrifices to Satan. This went on for hundreds of years where the rich would burn the poor and everyone was having orgies and shit until, as the story goes, lots of rich people were there in the 1980's and there was a poker game going and one man no one knew won and revealed himself as Satan and dragged them all to hell. A few people (apparently) escaped and told the story of the night but loads were never found,it still stands (in disrepair) on Dublin mountains and to this day no one will go near it, there isn't even any electrical wire going to it anymore and you can see the Dublin mountains from anywhere in Dublin and every night the lights are on in it, no one knows why it happens.

The Hellfire club

Some of you might know Chris De Burg, he made a song inspired by the story of the hellfire club years ago called "Spanish Train"

Spanish train (sorry still can't work out how to embed videos)

So whats your local legends?

I only recently learned about it so I don't know much but there's this pond near my house and there are stories of a giant turtle living in it. That's pretty possible since they also say it's so deep that nobody has been able to find the bottom.

We have loads of those type stories of black panthers/ tigers living in the wild, some people believe they were illegally imported as pets and abandoned when they got too big although AFAIK no one has ever caught one (except in a blurry photo)

There are stories of wild cats littered around most of Europe. Who knows how many are true and how many are legends. We have a puma near the north downs where I lived in Surrey- I don't really believe it though. It's all 'he said, she said'.

Having said that, probably just over 10 years ago me and my brother were over the rec, walking our dog. We saw a couple of what we could swear were green parrots flying over head. We went home and told our family and were laughed at. Over the next year, more of our friends saw them. Now they're a really common sight in the South East of England. Apparently a few pet parakeets (not parrots) escaped and settled in the leafy hills. They were really successful for whatever reason and now there's a thriving colony.

I still don't believe in our puma though.

We have many Native American legends in NH. This is one.

The Legend of Chief Chocorua is based in Albany, NH

Chocorua's legend states that the Indian Chief Chocorua refused to flee from conflict with the white man. He stood his ground to fight for his land.

Chief Chocorua befriended one of the colonial settlers, a man by the name of Cornelius Campbell. Chief Chocorua left his son Tuamba in the care of Cornelius Campbell's family while he went north to celebrate a powwow. In the absence of Chief Chocorua, his son Tuamba ate some poison that was meant to kill marauding wolves. When Chocorua returned, Cornelius Campbell was away. Chief Chocorua was so angry over the death of his son that he killed Cornelius's wife and son. When Cornelius returned home, he found his family dead, he knew it was the doings of Chief Chocorua and hunted down the Indian Chief for revenge. Chief Chocorua fled to the top of the highest nearby mountain (Mt. Chocorua), knowing he would die. When Chief Chocorua reached the peak of the Mount Chocorua, he raised his arms to the sky and shouted "Evil spirits breathe death upon the cattle of the white man! Wind and fire destroy your dwellings! Panthers and wolves howl and grow fat on your bones. Chocorua goes now to the Great Spirit!" and then leaped to his death.

Two years later, Cornelius was found dead on Mt. Chocorua, partially eaten by wolves.

Other mysteries and legends in the Mt. Chocorua area all blame Chief Chocorua for the curse he put on the land and the people.

You might call it morbid but if I die in a way that I know my death is round the corner, I sort of want to put a curse on people too. Even though I don't believe in it, it would be a fun way to mess with people.

How would people know what he shouted before he jumped to his death? did he leave a suicide note or, in his case, suicide smoke signals? []

Okay, Madame Smartypants.....LEGEND has it that's what he said....lol

And Cat, if you like curses, well the Northeasterners do too. Here's some interesting stuff for you:

-When a person begins biting his lip, it is a signal that someone has used the evileye on him.

-Drop burnt matches into water to determine if you have been given the evil eye.

If the matches sink, you have been cursed.

-Rubbing a raw hen’s egg over a person may rid him or her of a curse.

When i was growing up there was a place called dead man's hill. It was a hill we used to go sledding, biking, ect and after you went down the hill, you had about 30 feet before you hit a fence. This would be the fence of a cemetery.
LEGEND has it that if you went into the cemetery before midnight and held your breath from before midnight till after, a ghost would appear and "take your breath away" and you would be one of the many that died at dead man's hill.

I tried it a couple times as a kid and i guess i'm still here.

Although if there were any ghosts there i think i would have scared them off because of my constant firework use in those woods.

Banghar Fort in Rajasthan is said to be haunted , although I have never actually been to that place.

The government of India controls it and doesn't allow any visitors during night, thus officially recognizing the ghost that does not exist there.

A Scooby-doo type conspiracy theory is being brewed.

MadHatter [486416]

Well that's just not fair. People bite their lips for a number of reasons. I bite my lip frequently but never when I lie (or, at least not because I'm lying). Perhaps I'm just too comfortable lying and too fidgity/anxious in general.

We had a few local legends in my hometown.

The first legend is the Blue Man. There is a small cemetery on this little winding road next to a forest reserve. I won't lie, it's probably the least spooky cemetery I've ever been to. The road it's on winds between two of the biggest roads in that part of town, and it's located behind one of those blossoming non-denom mega-churches. Anyways, there's a large mausoleum facing the road, very old and gated/chained closed. The legend says that if you knock on the mausoleum door, and say Blue Man with each knock, exactly at midnight/in the light of the moon, the Blue Man will appear to you. People have also claimed to have seen the Blue Man standing next to his mausoleum while driving by in the middle of the night. Like most local legends, people always know someone who's seen it, but never seen it themselves.

Another variation of the legend is that if you go into the cemetery at night (and in the light of the moon), you'll see a blue orb floating through the cemetery. The blue orb is said to be the lamp-light of the blue man, who is the spirit of an early settler. It's worth noting that there are several lights in the back of the cemetery that can be seen (and can be seen reflecting off of the tombstones) from the road. It's also entirely possible that, given the sharp curves of the road (which is immediately adjacent to the curving cemetery plot), the blue orb seen was just headlights reflecting off the tombstones.

My experience with Blue Man: I have tried it on more than one occasion, without any success. I lived pretty close to it, so we'd party, get sloshed, and decide we wanted to do some ghost hunting. Never saw anything, but there was one time that I pissed on a tombstone ("Do something about it. Come at me") and then I sprained my ankle on the way down the hill.
It should be noted that I no longer participate in activities of that nature.

There was also this old farmhouse just outside of city limits that was rumored to be haunted/meth lab/etc. It was in complete disrepair, with the lawn overgrown all the way to your waist. There was a huge tree in the middle of the front yard that had a noose hanging from it; the old owner of the house supposedly killed himself. I don't remember if there were any spooky details thrown in - maybe he killed his family, too? Who knows. It's probably all bullshit anyways.

All of the doors had been removed from the house, all the windows smashed out, and the interior walls were all covered in graffiti. I'd like to say it was spooky demonic cult shit, but it was mostly just penises and profanity. Typical shit. There were massive holes in the second floor where the house had started to crumble and fall apart. My friends all went upstairs, but I didn't trust that shit so I stayed down in the front doorway keeping watch. I had a really bad feeling about the place, but we were also trespassing in an area where trespassing can get you shot. The neighbors were familiar with the house's reputation, and were known to come over to check it out or call the cops. They actually did eventually come over (they saw my car, and pulled up behind me in their massive pick-up and shone their lights around. We managed to stifle our flashlights and they didn't catch us, but it was close.

The kicker about the place, the thing that gave it any real spark: the basement. Or, rather, the lack of one. One of my friends had gone there several times long before and said there were stairs going to the basement, but when we were their, that area was just floor. Like it had been boarded over with the express intent of hiding the fact it had ever been there.

The other interested part is that entire little nook where the stairs were (under the stairs to the second floor) was charred black, like someone had tried to burn through it. It was the only place in the entire house that looked burned; it covered the floor, walls and ceiling of the nook, but did not extend into the rest of the house.

I'm always a legitimate contributor. But only on legitimate threads. Not moronic ones. If my answer is not a serious one, it's probably because the thread itself is a joke.
1035358 [1035358]

Jasus what ghost blew his ectoplasm all over your cornflakes this morning? you do realise that you are arguing that a thread about the paranormal is not legitimate on a section of the forums specifically called "Paranormal"? that would be like going on to a Nintendo forum and saying that a thread about Mario isn't legitimate.

By the way since I am bored and we are pointing out how flawed your posts have been on this thread you also can't say "I'm always a legitimate contributor. But only on legitimate threads" because it is a contradiction, it is either you are always a "legitimate contributor" or only a "legitimate contributor" under certain conditions, you can't be both. Honestly if your only reason to post was to tell people reasons why they shouldn't post then you probably have bigger problems than your inability to use a language you have probably been speaking since you were a kid the biggest one probably being finding a surgeon willing to remove that probe from your ass...
