Hi, I was messing around on a custom server builder, and I started to wonder, what kind of hardware (and software actually) does your average web server run, such as a server torn might run on? Obviously, intel/AMD both have their Xeon CPU ranges, and equally Nvidea and AMD have their respective server graphics cards (the NVidea Tesla for example), but what practical use do these have on a text based game like this? Sorry for all the questions!

Can't speak for Torn, but a lot of web/app servers are generally virtualised (on a much bigger data centre server), this gives the host an easier way to set up/tear down the server instances- let's say you want a server for a few months. It also provides an easier route to upgrade the virtual server, by committing more virtual resources to it if the demand on it increases.
I have a couple of physical "boxes" in a data centre, then virtualise other servers within, so you can also have both of course, depending on needs.
Either way- budget is the primary factor.
Oh say back 5-6 years ago our servers generally had 32gb RAM 4-8 CPU's and 1-5TB space in a RAID.
However - as MegaChintz has stated - most of them now are virtual through Azure, AWS, BlackMesh, etc... These are (depending on which tier you're on) elastic, so they can scale up by adding more resources when needed and scale back down during low server load. People also opt for these services because they can spin up cheap servers at will for things such as load testing, etc...
16gb ram minimum on ur server is a good place to start most high end games can be hosted well if u have good ram a good and a unlimited network connection,. Even torn would see a huge performance increase simply by updating the servers ram.
