When you get enough experience to level up, you have the option to either level up or hold. Does holding have any advantages? Also, where can you see how much experience you have?

Some players will say holding is the way to go, others won't.
In my opinion the only good thing about holding is that players will underestimate you and you will receive lots of free defends.
However leveling will give you more life which will make you more durable in attacking, you can gain more merits through leveling. The only downside in my opinion is that if you have rubbish stats then people will use you to level from by attacking and leaving you.
If you were to hold I would personal do it at level 15 so you can travel and do everything.
Torn is unique compared to other text games out there, there is no visible experience bar and never will be. The only way to see it is by travelling to China and paying 75k to the fortune teller who will tell you what % you're through your level.
All in all it's totally up to you how you want to play Torn.
Possible more defends, you feel like you should hold back and let your stats catch up, having a level that is round, having it be a funny number if that's your thing I guess, easier to do the lose to x contract, I'll think you're cool <3
As for exp at 15 you can fly to china to see how close you are to the next level.

You might be able to trick noobs into losing to you, but good players will know not to attack you if you are a strong level holder that they can't beat.
Weaker stat players can beat you if you level hold because life is a like a 5th stat, as well you could argue your stats are less effective for example defense reduces the damage you take.... but being a level holder you have lower health and can't take that much since your life pool is low so it's just less effective.
BUT Personally i do wish i had tried out being low level holding as you can always level up if you feel like it's hindering you, however you can't level backwards :)
This question is asked over and over again, and has been answered as often as it's asked. Therefore -R for not checking the forum for this post before asking.
Unless you want to do something unique, don't level hold before 15. After that, you will probably have enough knowledge of the game and yourself to decide.
