I guess this is going to get moved, but I felt like it belonged in the general discussion (because games, imgur/reddit, everyone knows type of sh*t).
Now I'm not an aged man, I'm *only* 26 so I have some "old" nostalgia as well as rather modern experiences. Obviously I've played 2D and 3D games before I got into text based games, and I'm that that it's two completely different experiences. What I like about text based games is that I can express myself, unlike online games (be it MMO or FPS). The problem back in the day was that you could not contact or express your opinion about a game, and nowadays you usually need to display your real name (facebook etc).
Now we all know that people will make everything dramatic on the internet, even make fun about wanting to kill you. I will admit that I use a worse language sometimes, only when dealing with owners/companies, but I limit myself to "shithead" and "garbage game" and avoid actual threats. I'm drifting, so let me get to the point, recently Call of Duty released their trailer for the new CoD game, let's watch it:
Today, the people behind Battlefield released their's:
Now, I'm not a "fan" of Battlefield, but if I'm to buy a FPS game I've been more likely to go for their game. In the later years people has been asking for "WWI" and "WWII" type games, and neither has complied. I'm thrilled that BF is going WWI personally, and I love their trailer. If CoD got as high of a like ratio as Battlefield I would be pissed, but seeing them with a negative ratio of 71% dislikes just breaks me. These people has spent millions on developing something they want to make, they follow the same recipe as always (progression in time) and get all the hate possible. I mean, imagine spending years on creating something, get hated beyond imagination, and your competitor's theme music get's reputation as "your funeral". It's sad for the studio, especially seeing as their fans were begging for futuristic games (according to sales numbers). All of a sudden, they do a 180 and hate you for doing your best.
Don't get me wrong, I love the battlefield trailer so much I've listened to the soundtrack for an hour now (Seven nation army by White Stripes, Remixed by The Glitch Mob). Let's just listen to the masterpiece:
It almost feels like people are trapped in the past, feeling like they can't be heard, desperately screaming for attention because they've never been heard before. In my opinion Battlefield deserves the credit it has gotten, and Call of Duty has gotten (several times more) what it deserves - for not listening to customer requests. I still believe that people are reacting beyond what is reasonable though, joking about hoping the "CoD developers commits suicide". It's just such a striking blow, people has a certain level of pride, some to an unhealthy level (ref: Toyota engineer committed suicide for mistake).
As an electrician, if a customer sent me a mail requesting/joking about me committing suicide I would not look the other way. It seems that people today are becoming brats, behaving and saying whatever they *hope* generates a like or two. Not considering what the actual receiver... well, receives.
I'm happy that BF wins this round, but as an end customer I have to say that I'm glad that they focus on two different aspects of war. If both developers made a WWI game I'd be sad. Games is about a diverse experience, and if everyone made the same game it would not be a diverse (sub-) culture. What do you guys and gals think? Is the extreme hatred for CoD on them? I certainly like Battlefield's trailer more, but in-game I won't hear the theme music so... anything could happen.
