and whats the difference between atoms and ions?
The periodic table is used for the ordering and layout of the elements based on their properties.
An atom is the smallest 'thing' that makes up matter, that is not in itself a fundamental particle. It is formed of electrons, and a nucleus of protons and neutrons. An atom can become ionised if it gains or loses an/many electrons, thus becoming positively or negatively charged rather than neutral, like the atom.
The table has a variety of uses, On a basic level it tells you the amount of electrons, protons and neutrons each element has. For certain groups it also tells you how many electrons are in its outer shell.
Once you delve into chemistry the periodic table becomes key for many calculations in order to find moles of a substance.
It's a place where we can see all the different properties of atoms.
At my house the periodic table is the one we keep in the storage shed to be used on camping trips and bar-b-ques at the lake. We use it periodically to place all our foodstuffs and to keep the cooler off the ground.
adams and Ians....when Adam, our good friend gives our other good freind Ian too much of the home brew or moonshine. Ian gets drunk as hell and becomes Ianized and funny as hell. and has a positive up beat attitude. Though after of a couple of hours and same number or more drinks/shots of Adam's home brew or shine. Ian Completely loses his postive attitude and becomes morosely negative, often kicking his poor old dog and saying things like, well shit Spike,why don't you run off with another man too!
Adam on the other hand drinks so much that he is in a thermodynamic equlibrium and boring as hell as well as always sort of looking like he's going to fall asleep or that he could take off at any minute to look for his friend Ian. Those two are soul mates or more appropriately termed birds of a feather and always together.
You can se what group, number, family and mass of an atom in the periodic table.
An ion is a loaded atom. It becomes negative by gaining electrons (probably to fill its outer shell) or positive by losing electrons.
