and there you have the clash of cultures of gaming.

I am from a diverse gaming background where this usually would be seen as something pretty good and many people here are not from a RPG background, so thats the way it goes.

Nova :
And there is no slagging against BB from me at least. I dont know the guy other than he paid a lot of money to be indestructible and good for him, and now a NPC said ok deity mode off for now in regards to your business enterprise.

Anyways I am once again done with the thread. One has spoken, one is correct, adapt or don't, up to you.
-Good on Ched for making the game less linear, and to Duke too.

Eddeh [23878] Wiki Contributor

It's not slagging BB, it is a conversation on whether it is fair or not for Duke to attack him and his employees. The argument that it is fair because of BBs actions do not amount to slagging him off. I don't care what BB does, he can play how he likes, but if a new mechanic is enacted to try and reduce the amount of money he can mug from Duke he should accept those consequences.

It is naive to think that Ched doesn't know what Duke is doing, or that Duke has somehow gone rogue and it is against the rules. Ched makes the rules, we have no rights here other than those Ched affords us. This is no different to any other nerf. When self busters could get infinite dex, Ched put a stop to it. When busting could give you infinite crime experience, Ched put a stop to it. Now BB can mug infinite cash, Ched is reacting - not putting a stop to it. BB has said multiple times that he doesn't use energy to train, so that energy is only going towards attacks, therefore the 50 odd mil per day is actually a lot - sure he could hit other targets but Duke always has money and he doesn't have to spend any time trying to find out if it is worthwhile.

Sorry for the long post, but this is not a case of vilifying BB, I have the utmost respect for him. He did not start this post, he wasn't the first to cry that this was unfair. The argument and judgement is in response to people who obviously do not like the new Duke and are using this as an excuse to complain about him.

If duke was attacking his company the entire time, like hosping them all himself in a short period of time then I would understand but if he's not and paying people or barely doing it then my only answer is ¯_(ã)_/¯
I don't understand anymore so I'm going silent on this thread

Sorry In a RPG game that is a PvP type of game that takes years of building your character up then all of a sudden introduce a new NPC that never existed. That is a stretch. But then the real prob is fine if that was truly an NPC and had a code were if mugged by someone X amount of times this is the reaction again fine. but it is a person controlling duke. So say they don't like a person or faction and react one way like to BB. But then another person does the same thing as BB at some point but they like that faction or a person so then they do nothing. thats not how a NPC works. that is how one of the players in the game can work, but that player then spent the time and energy playing the game to get to that point. not handed an account that has massive resources and stats a decade (i know its wrong an estimate) into the game.

BTW how do you know BB paid a lot of money to be indestructable? are you talking about torn money or real money?
Eddeh [23878] Wiki Contributor

Adding new features has to happen, it is not up to us to say what should be developed - otherwise there would be dogs that gave infinite stats everywhere. And we don't know that the person controlling is a player, could just be a developer who has a creative streak.

Pretty sure he means in game money, BB must have spent a huge amount on SEs. He could mean rl money, but only BB and Ched will know if that's true.
BodyBagger [99177]

I spent $5 the first month I started playing, and I started subscribing 2 months ago due to books. So, now you know. :D

With regards to Duke, my point is still the same. I find it unfair to pick on my employees. How can I compete with an NPC? Duke has unlimited energy, unlimited money, etc. My employees have been getting attacked a lot, have been threatened and have been sent 100 boxes of tissues. I'm quite sure if this was another player, I could deal with him or her very effectively. ;) Therefore, this is a targeted attack towards 1 player, whether directly or indirectly.

Now, Duke can't do his own dirty work and he's joining in with players to do attacks against me. I don't see Duke attacking other people in the game unless they owe him money from loans.... since he's a loan shark. Don't get me wrong, though, I couldn' care less about being attacked by him, but it just seems odd that it's only me.

Maybe Ched should put out a forum post and let us know about the new development and role of Duke within the game so we can all adjust our gameplay accordingly. For example, "anyone attacking Duke can expect retaliation." That would be interesting with the Duke mission. Didn't we get informed when the new Duke was introduced? Don't we get informed every time some new adjustment is introduced to the game? Why not this time?

Interesting fact: On my last post, I received 19 thumbs up, and 1 thumb down. The 1 thumb down was from sugarvalves. I just found that interesting and thought I would share.
_Cynic_ [206537]

In all honesty, this is why I first raised concerns about the new duke the moment he started sending out items and buying things from bazaars. For me that was the point when I could see whoever was controlling duke had freedom that would allow them to do things that would cause controversy.
The targeting of BB is just a continuation of that.
For those who think it is fine I wonder what would be the line the person would have to cross for you to think some control needs to be put in?
What is next. Will Duke start targetting factions when territories come out? Will he start dropping DB's? Will he start going and hosping individuals abroad? And will people still support actions such as these as its a character and spices things up.

As far as I am concerned a NPC should not look to impact or showing bias in any form towards individual players. The moment you do you bring into question the integrity of staff. You start risking accusations of favoritism towards certain individuals.

So much for that article where Sugarvalves praised you for your achievements.. []

The main problem with a person controlling an NPC is that a person will always be biased towards certain players / groups. Sugarvalves taking that to the extreme (as shown by how poorly he handles critiscism), which kind off ruins it. Don't get me wrong, I like the increased interaction with Duke, and it should be done with more npc's. But not by the loose cannon who is handling it now.

Lmao if his health wasnt so high he wouldnt stand a chance against me...Plus I was in need of rehab when he attacked and also i hope that 2k can help him on whatever he so desperately needs. Opening my events to this brought a smile to my face :)

CapturerHulkmad [1904837]

Exactly cynic you are right it doesn't matter who duke is targeting or giving away money to the thing matters is that NPC is not behaving the way NPC are supposed to behave. This NPC is behaving like Artificial Intelligence with a personal Vendetta. It might seem fun for a while but there might be a negative impact on the game as some of the players are regular ones who might loose interest in the game.

Louis_de_Pointe [1963196]

I will answer in parts for ease of reading :
"Sorry In a RPG game that is a PvP type of game that takes years of building your character up then all of a sudden introduce a new NPC that never existed. That is a stretch. "
It is not a real stretch in RPGs at all. When a character gets so strong they can act with impunity a Dungeon-master will throw a spanner in the works.
This is accepted practice.

"But then the real prob is fine if that was truly an NPC and had a code were if mugged by someone X amount of times this is the reaction again fine.but it is a person controlling duke. "
NPCs in my experience of past 20 years gaming online and past 30 years of using RPGs, computer generated/pen and paper, have / can been controlled by Games-masters and staff.
- my most memorable one was the creator of an online one was eating myself because I prevented certain enemies from using various NPCs - i took it as something to boast about and bring further ridicule to my enemies in that game. - I had taken down certain NPCs repeatedly. I also took the intervention of the creator of the game as a good hint not to continue doing that.

"So say they don't like a person or faction and react one way like to BB. But then another person does the same thing as BB at some point but they like that faction or a person so then they do nothing."
Has this happened in this instance?
It is a risk and if it does happen then you bring it up to the relevant staff member who is responsible of overseeing the conduct of staff - note i am unaware which staff rank that would be. Personally I would ask Jammed or WD on where to go with the query because I trust them as professional staff members. (not dissing any other staff member i just know those guys more from NPC).

"thats not how a NPC works. that is how one of the players in the game can work, but that player then spent the time and energy playing the game to get to that point. not handed an account that has massive resources and stats a decade (i know its wrong an estimate) into the game. "
I make NPC characters of a certain strength and I do make them stronger as games progress. Some NPCs are static strength and some are not across games.
Some are controllable at times and some are not. - In one space game I was being rather cocky at the time was considered one of the best fighters in the game, i unwittingly offended a member of staff who was 'undercover' for want of a better phrase and was more than happy to accept the challenge over the contested space. Myself and two other players vs the member of staff and his two other players - I was defeated due to their tweaked ship. When I realised I had been duped I took it on the chin and this furthered my reputation as having to be taken down by a staffer rather than a player.
- different people react to things differently. and i was a cocky SOB and was a little surprised it was only a space fight not any territory lost. (although i did lose my ship which cost a considerable amount compared i was engaged in other disputes across the server/galaxy)

"BTW how do you know BB paid a lot of money to be indestructable? are you talking about torn money or real money?"
Most recently from his interview in the newspaper, unless somehow he managed to get Stat Enhancers free.
Would like to know his business plan if he did it all with Torn money - if you see my networth i suck big time.

I have answered exhaustively on this subject and my time is better spent on other things now.

RobinHood [145]

Whenever they see someone going up without investing real life money for them it is a bad example and they focus on him to bring him down: reducing his fortune, deleting his account, fed for no reason..it happened to me,now BB, who knows who's next? like this they will be losing credibility and gain bad reputation..as for me i keep my character up RH just for good old friends, beside that for me i left the game long time ago..is this what the admin want? all good players to leave this game?
KickRocks [1030718]

Well you got me Rey, I am not privy and haven't tried to seek out information regarding who on staff is paid and why.

I am sorry that your favorite publication has been turned into a farce.
Mat-Senpai [952164]

You're no longer the strongest fam, if i'm honest I think it's a healthy turn of events - however if ched did have an issue with you mugging him and using him as a cash cow i'd prefer he added a few more stats... around 100 times yours or w/e

but what can you do?
BraveKath [1815519]

I don't keep up with forums, so just reading this now. This is deplorable. An NPC shouldn't be bent on the financial ruin of a player in good standing. We all know the NPC is Sugarvalves or at least primarily so. This takes something fun and turns it into something sad and pathetic. If "Duke" did it one day or even two perhaps, okay it could still be viewed as 'playful' perhaps.

Ched time to reign in the flying monkeys.
PsycWard [1579270]

My only thought here is if this was about a noob and an established player wouldn't we all just say.
"Well stop doing whatever it is that is pissing them off...Problem solved"

BB is constantly attacking Duke.
Duke isn't just a sitting NPC anymore and started retaliating.

Maybe just leave Duke alone and he doesn't bother you? Seems pretty simple but I'm sure that's why it's a shit idea.
