I think we'd agree that it was Chad's decision to unleash Duke as a spiced up character, but I'd love to know how much he knows about what is currently going on.

Is Ched really trying to drive a long term player from the game? Cos let's face it the evidence is pointing to that occurring.

So either Ched is onboard with it (which when you think about it probably isn't the smartest business decision), or Duke is being used as a personal vendetta settling agent.

I don't have a problem with Duke having some personality, but a player having unrestrained access to Duke and his resources is dangerous ground. The potential is for some to hide behind Duke and just hit players he has a beef with... But of course, there's no evidence of that happening is there?

hmm, interesting math

Only myself and RonBurgundy are members of staff in JFA. No worries though, 2 & 7 are similar.

That said, the duke thing has done one thing, it has def created feelings, good/bad/indifferent. I don't know why it has turned back into a bash x/y/z faction thing again, seems a bit odd. Even a JFA member is in the company that is getting attacked, whatever though
RonBurgundy [71545]

You made over $160m by assisting myself and 3 other people at once and just admitted that you have another 50 clients lined up to the tune of $1.5bn just in fees, on top of mugging $2bn a month and owning a 10* Oil Rig.

You're not struggling and this is kind of your own fault for putting yourself in a position where you've essentially become nothing more than an NPC yourself.

Good old Duke... Hiding behind his NPC status:

YOU CANNOT ADD AN NPC TO THE BOUNTY LIST

Might as well just go straight to the source...
  • Target: sugarvalves
  • Level of target: 17
  • Reward: $170,000
  • Minimum reward: $170,000
  • Stay anonymous: No
  • Total cost: $170,000

Mentions: sugarvalves [1963573]

I stand by what I said initally about Duke. I love what he brings to the game and I do want more interactive NPC. Duke's inital response does seem reasonable. What regular player wouldn't be pissed that he was getting mugged for millions everyday? Duke's just acting in a way to make him more realistic Wanting revenge seems only normal and I viewed it as inocuous because I thought only Duke would be doing the hosping. Duke isn't online everyday and when he is it's barely for an hour. Alone, Duke couldn't possibly do much damage so it seemed like good fun; something to rile up the community for a bit and get a bit of buzz going. A lot of what Duke does really is just talk.

Now after reading this comment in particular, I do find Duke's action to be a bit disconcerting. It's one thing to joke about shutting down someone's company and another to actually do it and an NPC in particular shouldn't have the power to do it. Furthermore, I'm totally jumping on the conspiracy bandwagon and stating it does seem fishy that there are negotitions going on behind closed doors. And even if the oppurtunity to make money by hosping BB's employees were available to everyone it just seems wrong. As seen with the case of continuous bounties, being constantly hosped could ruin the game for some people and cause them to quit. If it is true that Ched or staff or whoever is tired of BB's mugging, they should take it up with BB personally and solve the problem on their own rather than using his employees as collateral where there's a real risk that they could get fed up and quit the game. Sure the game will survive if 10 or 20 people quit but it's more about the principal. Regardless of his stats, BB's still a player so if it can happen to him, it can happen to any of us. In this case the line between roleplaying and legitimate threats needs to be drawn. If it is true that Ched's tired of BB's mugging he could easily fix the problem. BB claims he's only attacking to help out with the mission that unlocks expert mission so just change the mission. Make it specify to leave Duke or hosp him so that mugging would lead to an incomplete mission. Or create alternative missions to unlock expert missions so that there'd be less people needing to attack Duke, therefore there would be less instances of mugging.

I'm all for Duke shaking up things and getting at a little down and dirty. I'm not for the game being ruined for players by NPC abuse through the guise of a joke.

deft [979003]

I'm sure he knows. If anyone quit the game because Duke retaliated against them i'd be laughing my ass off, just saying.
Sgtcole [1996434]

He's is controlled by someone I notice an error when I pm him. I asked him what weapons he has. He said "My fists brother. All I need" forgot a space after the full stop
BodyBagger [99177]

I'm not struggling. I never said that I was. I thought I was allowed to mug other players just like everyone else? I thought I was allowed to run an oil rig just like anyone else?

So, you're saying that it's my own fault for playing the game well? Therefore, I'm like an NPC and deserve to be treated differently than everyone? So, I should not have played the game so well. Hmmm, interesting.

So, is this a warning for anyone that aspires to do well?

Edit: What's that saying? Hate the game, not the player!

Clearly there is no answer here.
There is clearly a hard core group who believe that whoever is behind Duke should be allowed to do what they want.
At the same time there is a growing group (and I am firmly in this group) who feel that the increasing actions of Duke compromise the integrity of the game.

I do believe if it continues the group of people unhappy with Duke's role will increase. I further believe it will cause serious issues further down the line.

If the message BB got about duke looking for a partner faction is true then that is really worrying. The implications for me are massive.
You will effectively have a group of players bankrolled by Ched rather then earning money the way every other player and faction have to. Let me ask JFA what would you do if it was you that was chosen by Duke and you were asked to take on JFK? What divisions would that cause within the faction?
What if you were asked to disrupe SA or FTW. As fun as it might be for you, surely you can see how it compromises the integrity of the game, and how neutrals would be swayed into believing the whole "JFK run the game due to the number of players they have who are staff etc..."

And again let me ask the supporters of Duke and what is happening, where would you draw the line? Would you be happy if Duke started dropping DB's on factions and thus disrupting the whole warringfactions side?
How would you feel if he started interferring in competitions like elimination or dog tags etc. Would that be fine with you?
Because all that is simply an extension of what is currently happening.
deft [979003]

The whole point is to make the NPC more life like and interactive. That's awesome, and I wouldn't mind if there were more NPCs like Duke that behaved in different ways. If you guys all hold hands and cry like babies we might not get something like that. Like you said, you poke an angry bear expect to get mauled. Duke is now life like, so it's BodyBagger's choice if he'd like to keep attacking him on a regular basis. Maybe he won't attack him regularly any more if this is going to be Duke's response to players going after him on a routine basis.

Your analogy comparing JFA makes no sense at all. We haven't been group mugging an NPC on a regular basis to profit billions of dollars without repercussion. The NPC is now fighting back just like a faction such as JFK/SA/FTW would and now everyone is aware of it. It means if you continue to attack Duke on a regular basis, you might be subject to retaliation. Simple as that. Get over it and stop being a glass house beezy.
Kingstown [1957679]

Too bad that this discussion have been ended up into another topfaction bitchfest.

Most players that would be mugged for 1b would try to do something about it. So is Duke.
When BB stops continuesly mugging Duke this whole thing ends. It's that simple. Has nothing to do with factions at all.
When BB decides to continue (which is his legitimate choice ofcourse) then he has to face the consequences like everyone else that mugs someone for a total of over 1b.

Basicly Duke is doing what a lot of other rich high level players are doing all the time. Perm bounty people and try to hit them where it hurts. In this case his company. The average player could not care less about JFA/JFK/SA/FTW or whatever faction. This is GD and not FD. Thank goodness.

_Cynic_ [206537]

I have made no analogy comparing JFA at all. I have asked you, if what BB said is true about Duke looking for a faction to partner it, how would JFA feel if it was chosen and bankrolled by Duke. Would you see that as far on the rest of Torn that JFA players do not have to earn money like everyone else.
How would you feel if Duke wanted JFA to war JFK? Where would your loyalties lie then?

As a supporter of what is happening with Duke, how would you feel if Duke dropped DBs on factions or intereferred in competitions. Say in elimination he decided he would attack anyone in the same team as BB would you see that as fair?

No analogy made at all.
_Cynic_ [206537]

You are right the average player doesnt care about JFA etc. But as a player in a faction, how would you feel if a certain faction "partnered with Duke" and was bankrolled by him. I.e given loads of points, money, meds, drugs etc at no cost to the faction?
Would you feel it is fair on your faction? As a player would you feel that is acceptable players in one faction have been given this advantage?

deft [979003]

I just told you that you aren't making sense because JFA hasn't been attacking Duke. Therefore this would never happen. But if we were mugging Duke on a regular basis and he decided to retaliate against us, we'd probably think it's hilarious because that's the type of faction we are. I would think it's funny at least, even in a competition. It's a game dude why are your panties so twisted around? You're trying to turn this into faction drama instead of using logic and actually trying to look at whats happening. There's a cause and effect going on here.
_Cynic_ [206537]

Deft you clearly are not reading what I have written.
BB mentioned he was told Duke was looking for a faction to PARTNER with, and JFA was one of the ones in discussions with duke.

Nothing about if JFA have been attacking duke or not. I do not give a shit about that.

But Duke partnering with a faction is a concern. What do you think that would mean? As far as I can see it means Duke effectively bankrolling a faction to do with as he wants. Be that target an individual or another faction.

Your attempts to sidetrack and avoid what I am saying suggests to me an element of truth to this.
So let me ask outright.
Are JFA in discussions with Duke about working together in any capacity?

Robb-Stark [1075937]

so the question needs to be asked how many players via staff or committee will control duke and what problems will be caused of personal issues
Glueshooter [435835]

Has anyone mentioned the rules yet?

Potentially, 3 of the rules, put into place, I assume, to instigate fairness and equality, have been transgressed.

I thought they applied to everyone, regardless of status.

I think we need a touch of clarification on this point, as it does have wider ramifications (even if the answer is "staff can do what they like")
