I'm certainly not the strongest player, by far, not the richest player, by a LOT.
But I'm attempting to guide 2 new players along without handing them the keys to the city. I don't have access to the keys really.
Are you mentoring anyone atm? Are you having any success at it? Seems like the retention rate is pretty low. I've offered substantial help in the past provided they show the effort to grow on their own, only to find they go inactive rather quickly.
Torn needs new blood to stay healthy. And I've seen a few comments here recently that were quite salty about mentoring. But that's Torn forums and is to be expected.
From a new player's perspective, I am very happy that there are a number of players like yourself who are willing to provide some mentoring to help players become successful in the game. I'm not talking about handouts, but counsel and suggestions. I am sure it gets frustrating for long-term players who receive requests that are little more than begging from newbies, but there are other players like me who really do appreciate and learn. There are a handful of players in this game that responded to initial questions I had in my first ten days, and they have continued to be a sounding board for me and provide excellent advice.
I can definitely see myself developing into a player who wants to pay it forward and become a mentor to new players. That's quite a distance away, but pretty much everything is in this game if thinking about it correctly.
If by mentoring, you mean "give xanax", then I need mentoring ;P
But on a serious note, I didn't have anyone that "mentored" me exactly, but I did throughout my earliest days have several higher level players that answered questions I had or gave me little bits of advice, and Viking and the other leaders in LT were kind enough to take me in and guide me a little, when I was only the nubbiest of nubs (right now I am the 8th nubbiest of nubs, but no longer the #1 nubbiest).
I think it's admirable that more established players do this sort of thing, and the small amounts of charity or advice I got early on really made a difference in me continuing to play.
Huzaifah [1407331] is the person i'm mentoring - I recruited him to our old faction Born Fighting and taught him how to chain cos he just came to leech
I've helped out tons of new players out but in terms of being someone's mentor I'd say I've taken 4 people under my wing, 3 of which are still active players. It's fun to see them start with just 100k stats or less and now they're all over a few million and on their way to capping there stats.
