Nope, only really worthwhile for merits.
You can only lose money by racing.
EDIT: daub contradicts me by saying you CAN win money by racing for money in a custom event. This is theoretically true, but as a new player, you probably would have a really bad car and wouldn't be able to win anything. Moreover, players don't usually race for money in the lower classes.

You could race for money, and win. Racing for money isn't the way for newbs to get rich of course. But strictly speaking what you say is lies!
Technically he is right, a noob can only lose money from racing since his car will be a pile of crap.
not if he/she races other bangers
Bang bang
thank you mates for your answers. :)
you cant, but you can win merit

exactly 2. reach class a. and um, win 100 or 250 races. can't remember. may have to be in same car too. ask baldr.
One merit for reaching class A. One merit for 250 wins in the same car. (Normally, you get the 250 after hitting A class, but it doesn't have to be that way.)
If you're about to start racing, I recommend reading my racing FAQ, to get you off to a good start.

I've only done a couple custom races, but the system keeps a chunk of the pot doesn't it? Half?
Even if it keeps 1/3 or a flat amount, you're probably not going to break even because the odds that you're constantly racing against people with lower DS is quite low. (Considering you're just now starting) Not that DS directly determines individual winners, but I assume over time it would characterize the trend.
Pretty sure it's all paid out to top three finishers, depending on number of entrants
