for starters you should stick to city jobs, Education, Law (& Medical is optional),
for the perks you get by reaching the highest rank of each job.
These perks will stay for your entire Torn life, even if you leave the job, so it's actually very good to do them as soon as possible.
Education is especially important, as it gives you a 10% reduction of further Education time for any course you're doing,
and you can also use 10 job points there to boost any of your work stats by 100.

as long as your work stats are low, there is not much money to gain from jobs,
so take a look into the Tutorials & Guides section for a power-levelling guide to level 15.
As soon as you reach level 15(unlocks flying), you can rent a PI with airstrip, and make ~4-8 million per day(depending on your activity) by flying and buying flowers or plushies (depending what's cheaper), and selling them on your bazaar(or on the item market, if you don't have the bazaar yet.

Talk yourself into a grocery or sweet shop job for the free cans. Can be sold between 1.6m - 3.3m each, which will pay far better than a salaried job.

And no shortage of safe traders to sell them to, including yours truly. ;-)
