I believe the last newsletter said they'll get rid of the captcha altogether. No idea when it will happen (soon...?), but I doubt they'll waste time fixing it before removing it.
Not much can be done to fix this. By the time a developer gets anywhere near to looking at it, you'll see a different captcha, and you can just use a different option anyway. Either way, they're getting rid of captchas all together soon so I don't think any action needs to be taken.
it seemed obvious to me that that was a 2.... and as above, not much can be done sadly.
By the way, you can change your preferred method of validation in Preferences > General settings, in the meantime.
