THIS GUIDE IS NOW OUTDATED!
STOCKS 3.0 HAS BEEN RELEASED, WOO!

The Basics

The Stock Market allows you to purchase shares in a company, and in exchange for holding a specific number of shares (which vary depending on the company) you will be entitled to various payouts or benefits. These are often referred to as Benefit Blocks (BBs), which must have at least the minimum requirement of stocks stacked together. This guide will cover these benefits and discuss which give you the best bang for your buck when it comes to earning passive income.

Benefit Types

When it comes to passive income there are two different type of stock payouts, dividends and item payouts. Dividends will pay out on average once every 3 months at about 5% of the stock block's current value, thus these pay out 20% per year and take 5 years to recover their cost. The second type being item payouts, which reward you with an item (usually weekly on average) that you can use or sell and vary greatly from stock to stock for their return rates.

There are two exceptions to these types which still offer direct financial benefit, which are Home Retail Group (HRG) and Torn City Investment Banking (TCB) which payout random properties and improve bank interest rates respectively. Home Retail Group will payout a random non-upgraded property from trailers to castles, although it appears to provide lower end properties more often than the higher end variants. Due to the random nature of property payouts, it is hard to put an exact number on HRG's payout rate but with a little luck it could pay itself off pretty quickly. Torn City Investment Banking provides a 10% increase in interest from bank investments (calculated after merits), which is also hard to define as bank interest rates are constantly fluctuating. Looking at current interest rates and the cost of the benefit block, TCB will take a long time to return it's initial cost even with optimal bank investments. If you have a group of highly trusted friends only one of you needs to purchase the block and it can be shared between you as the interest is only calculated when you initially store money in the bank and you do not require to keep possession of the benefit block. This is however extremely ill-advised and is a great way to lose your benefit block.

The remaining benefits from BBs could save you money, improve company profits or provide services that would otherwise cost however they are not direct forms of income and so will not be covered in this guide. If you are looking to acquire some of these bonuses, then I would recommend that you do so after you have all of the other benefit blocks. The only exception to this would be West Side South Bank University (WSSB), which cuts down all education times by 10% and could shave a HUGE amount of time of your education.

Payout Mechanics

Many players complain of infrequent payouts and you can often go weeks or months without a payout from your benefit block, this is common and the payouts from all Benefit Blocks are extremely random but over time have an average payout rate. Every hour you have a small chance to receive a payout (for weekly stocks this is 1 in 168), which means that you could receive 3 payouts consecutively if you are lucky or none for many months if you are unlucky.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Do dividends payout a percentage of their original value or current value?

  • A: Dividend Stocks payout a percentage of their current value, so the performance of the stock affects your payout.

  • Q: Does awareness or the stock forecast have any affect on the frequency of BB payouts?

  • A: No, payouts are completely random and no external factors affect them.

  • Q: Should I max out my bank or buy stock BBs first?

  • A: It would be wise to buy FHG first and THEN max your bank, as this stock BB payout faster than the bank will, although you should compare this at the time as interest rates fluctuate. Currently the bank returns at 34.65m (1.73%) per week with 10/10 banking merits and a $2 billion investment for 2 months. This would take 1.09 years to break even.

  • Q: Which BB should I purchase next for fastest return?

  • A: Check the 'Cheat Sheet', they are ordered by fastest return rate.

  • Q: If I buy two benefit blocks, will I get twice the payout?

  • A: No, you will only earn the bonus from one of the stock blocks at a time.

  • Q: It's been two weeks without payout and my stock should payout weekly, is it broken?

  • A: No, payouts are completely random. Ensure your block has the message "You are currently earning a bonus from this block".

Cheat Sheet

The following 'cheat sheet' is always accurate as it automatically updates itself every few minutes and shows the cost of each Benefit Block and payout rate relative to the original cost, the percentage shown is how much of the initial cost is returned per week (on average). This resource is ordered from best to worst stock in terms of return rate with TCB excluded because of its difficulty to calculate. While HRG is included, because of its random nature the results may be slightly incorrect.

When property is sold back to the system you get 75% of your property value, so those values are listed in the table.

Properties from 13/07/2017 until 25/04/2018 and that is 41 weeks. Average weekly payout is 1,404,878

Current value of HRG is 513,439,500 Torn dollars, so weekly return is so far 0,27%

Edit: as of 6th of April I have received 4 castles and some palaces.

This is very nice, it's a shame it's a small sample, but very handy none the less :D

Edit: I'll edit in this preliminary data when I get the chance.

Great guide!

"Q: Should I max out my bank or buy stock BBs first?

A: It would be wise to buy the top 3-4 stock BBs first and THEN max your bank, as these stock BBs payout faster than the bank will, although you should compare this at the time as interest rates and stock values fluctuate."

I remember not too long ago I suggested the same to someone asking what he should do with his 400m, only to be told by several people that I am clueless and that "he should max his bank first thing!!!!1"

Can you link This? I'll have to redo the math again at current interest values, but I'm pretty sure the current top 4 stocks beat the bank in terms of return percentage.

If bank is like a stock BB

Cost 2,000,000,000 Torn Dollars

With 10/10 in banking merits and TCB stock block, two months profit is 331,540,000. Weekly profit is 38,679,666. Weekly return is 1,934%
Bug [1455582] Committee Committee

You can't use TCB in your calculations without adding it's cost...

If you consider it's 'weekly payout' to be the 2 month option divide by 8, without TCB and 10/10 banking I calculate 1.856%. That is much higher than I expected, I recall bank being much worse than stocks not too long ago. Perhaps varying item costs and raising stock prices are to blame.
ArttiIsGod [1954421] Wiki Contributor

Fair enough, can't use TCB. I have faction mate, who loans it. But still people can see the potential. Bank investment is 60 days for 2 months. 30 days for 1 month, 90 days for 3 months. 8 weeks is 56 days.

If you're SYM is still averaging every 2 days, then I've found where my missing drug packs are going.

:P
Bug [1455582] Committee Committee

Actually I've had 10 payouts in the past ~4 weeks, so it's closer to every 3 days xD
Harry_Baals [2091087]

Thanks for the guide BUG!  Its very well done and helpful, especially the ranking by payout in your cheat-sheet. thanks for putting this together!
Bug [1455582] Committee Committee

Its only worth buying once you know your going to use it. There's no point in buying it and leaving it sitting there for a few weeks.

Since your currently not in a PI, unable to fly and don't have a bazaar I would suggest you hold off until you have those previous things.
Run-Riot [1713552]

Went back over all the old HRG events I had while I was inactive and put them in a table. Kept all the values at estate agent prices for fairness as the majority of properties I just sell to that.
