What is the benefits of travelling?
Money. You can buy flowers and plushies pretty cheap overseas, then sell them back in Torn (to other players) for a large profit. $3M profit a day is fairly easy, and $5M profit a day is very feasible for an active player who flies a lot.
To make good money you *must* have (rent) a private island with an airstrip, and hire a pilot as staff. That lets you travel 30% faster than otherwise, and it lets you carry an additional 10 items. The extra happy will also help your gym gains.
As baldr said, money for one, and if you want some easy merits, quite a few can be had via flight time, and just flying back n forth to each place 50 times, obviously the shorter distance ones, like mexico are much quicker to get, but eventually you can collect them all. 8)
