Wise Wolf’s Guide to Education

In Torn City, just as in real life, education confers skills and benefits to those patient enough to do the grind. Education comprises 12 bachelor courses made up of 125 units. To complete all of the education without any reductions will take you approximately six years and four months. Individual units take between 7 days and 7 weeks. If you make uneducated decisions about education you will have a long time regret it.

There are several considerations when choosing a course. Pre-requisites, cost, work stat gain, duration, and perks it may confer.

Pre-requisites - The courses are structured with an introductory unit, one or more levels of intermediate level units and completion with a bachelor or masters unit.  They must be done in order as in introduction --> intermediate units --> bachelor, however in most cases the intermediate units can be done in any order. Introductory units (except one) confer no perks and bachelor units offer the best perks.

Cost – Each unit costs between $200 and $5000 to complete. In terms of game money this is completely irrelevant. The total cost for all education is $207,985.  This cost can be avoided by purchasing a stock benefit block of International School Torn City (ISTC) that at time of writing will cost approximately $65m.

Work Stat Gain – The total work stat gains from completing all educations is manual 3015, Intelligence 8193 and endurance 3535. If one were to complete the General Studies Bachelor first, which would without reduction take 28 weeks to complete, you would net an extra 270 manual 743 intelligence and 324 endurance. This amount of stats can be obtained in two weeks by receiving 1 train per day in any company in Torn. The only time work stat gain is an important consideration is possibly the first course chosen. I always recommend to brand new players to do introduction to self defence first as this will give them 50 of each work stat that will get them promoted in any of the starter jobs and give them time to read some guides.

Duration – As mentioned in the introduction education takes a ridiculous amount of time to complete. Thankfully there are ways to reduce this and it is highly recommended to every player to pursue these reductions as one of their highest priorities no matter what game style they play. The reductions available are:
  •  MeritsEducation Length : each bar filled in this upgrade gives 2% education time reduction. The first bar costs 1 merit the second 2 etc and the complete upgrade will cost 55 merits which will give you a 20% reduction in duration. Upon completing your education you will be able to use a merit reset to get these merits back. Please note that I am not even considering stopping at any number other than 10 bars.
  • Starter JobEducation: Attaining Principal rank in this job will give a further reduction of 10% for all future education courses. Before you rush off to become a recess supervisor however please consider this Guide by Tesla.
  • WSSB Stock Block: One million shares of this stock (approx $90m at time of writing) will give a further 10% reduction in education time. You may be able to borrow them off a friend especially if you have some collateral, as you only need to be holding them at the moment you sign up to a unit.
These three reductions are stackable but multiplicatively. So if you had all 3 of them it is a total of 35.2% reduction of time. There are a further two methods to reduce education time but these come into effect after the above reductions have been applied. They are:
  • Company Job Points – If you work in a 7*+ Hair Salon or a 1*+ Fitness Centre you are able to exchange a job point for 30 minutes reduction in the current education time. In a 10 star company this equates to 5 hours per day (20.8%), which is massive but most importantly gives you control of when your education course will complete. Rather than losing time because you were working, sleeping or otherwise engaged you can have your course complete at a time that is convenient to you.
  • Book of Carols – This will also reduce education by 6 hours but at time of writing costs a little over $10m. It also comes with a 6 hour cool down that will limit you to four a day for 24 hours reduction (potentially 50%).
Perks – Of the 125 units offered 94 of them confer a permanent perk that will benefit you in some way. Depending on the style of game you choose to play these will vary in usefulness. To help you prioritise the courses which are most beneficial to your play style I have classified them into groups or similar function.

Combat – Helps in a fight or helps to grow your combat stats.
  • Sport Science (Complete) – increases all gym gains 2%.
  • Combat Training (Complete) – unlocks weapons experience.
  • Biology (Complete) Unlocks ability to equip stat boosters.
  • Mathematics (Selected units)
  • General Studies (Selected units)
  • Self Defense (Complete) – Passive stat boosts see disclaimer below.
  • Health & Fitness (Complete) - Passive stat boosts see disclaimer below.
  • History (Selected units)
The disclaimer with units that provide passive stat boosts is that they interfere with your stat build. All of the passive boosts added together give 5% strength, 11% defence, 14% speed and 19% dexterity. This should be taken into account when planning your stat build. For example you may not want extra passives on strength and speed if you are using Frontline Fitness and trying to maintain some semblance of balance after passives are applied.

Also note  Health and Fitness bachelor will make it harder for enemies to escape which will make it harder for you to get the runaway merits.

For an in depth study check out the Handsome Guide to Education for battle.

Money – Helps with trading, investing or running a company.
  • History (Complete) – Opens museum, a must for all traders.
  • Business Management (Complete) – A must for company directors. Note: bachelor is only required for final two infrastructure upgrades that are required to upgrade a company to 10*. If a company already has these upgrades then the bachelor is not required.
  • Law (Selected Units)
  • Mathematics (Selected Units)
It is a common belief that a bachelor of Business Management is required to have a 10* company however in practise a player without this can maintain a 10* provided it is in a low competition field. For example easy to maintain a 10* flower shop, impossible to maintain 10* fitness centre.

A further note - As pointed out by Delta [2049998], it is possible to maintain a 10* company in even a highly competitive industry without the bachelor of business, provided all of the other perk providing units in the business degree are completed.

Crime – Helps with criminal activities.
  • Psychology (Complete) – Plus 10% crime experience.
  • Law( Complete) – Bailing, Busting and Escaping bonuses.
  • Computer Science (Selected Units)
Crimes 2.0 which will arrive one day will probably make crime much more interesting. Be prepared.

Miscellaneous – Random perks that don’t fit with the above three groups. These perks are incredibly useful and are worth keeping in mind.
  • Introduction to computing - Gain the ability to code simple viruses. Pickup an IIL benefit block ($7m) and you will have your 100 viruses merit in 500 days.
  • Intravenous Therapy - Gain the ability to withdraw and deliver blood. Make your own meds, sell them or donate to faction.
  • Driving Licence – Gain access to driving related crimes. Note not required for racing. Also people tend to go for this way too early.
  • Bachelor of Computer Science – Ability to send mail and money anonymously.
Well, that's all I have to say about that.

Keep in mind that Torn is a marathon. Planning your courses is of huge importance as these early decisions will have a long term effects. Reading the Tutorials and Guides forum will help you with this planning.

Important to note that the bachelor of business actually doesn't provide any benefits for a fully upgraded company, it's only needed if you start your own and need to upgrade it. It sounds a bit misleading when you says the bachelor is necessary for competitive companies when it's actually having most of the courses/all not including bachelor is necessary for competitive companies.

"Book of Carols – This will also reduce education by 30 minutes but at time of writing costs a little over $10m. It also comes with a 6 hour cool down that will limit you to four a day or 2 hours reduction (8.3%)."

The wiki says 6 hours reduction: wiki  (for some reason it links to the whole wiki, not specific page)

Thanks, updated. Must admit I was going off memory of using one. I just remember being bitterly disappointed lol.
iribuya [2103695]

Yeah 6 hours for 10-12m item is not really worth it in my books :P  But maybe if you desperately need a specific education done, it could be worth it to shave 2 days off.
Delta [2049998]

Uh not quite sure what you mean by "upgrading company to 10*." The bachelor allows you to get the final 2 size upgrades, final 2 warehouse upgrades, and final 2 staff room upgrades, but has no effect on ability to star up. What I meant was since most companies sold at higher stars are upgraded fully (excluding companies with high startup costs) the bachelor is unnecessary since the company is already upgraded and has no effect on income other than those upgrades.
PlatinumDevil [1920420]

Even if you start the company, when the time comes if you know and fully trust someone that won't scam you who happens to have the Bachelors in business you can just give them the company for them to upgrade it and then give the company back to the first person.

All of the passive boosts added together give 5% strength, 11% defence, 13% speed and 19% dexterity. This should be taken into account when planning your stat build. For example you may not want extra passives on strength and speed if you are using Frontline Fitness and trying to maintain some semblance of balance after passives are applied.

Boosts gained from education or any boosts in that matter, doesn't affect special gyms open. They are applied later. If I go to gym, my dex is 200 million, but when I fight, then effective because of the boosts is 250 million.

And not sure about the next one:

Also note  Health and Fitness bachelor will make it harder for enemies to escape which will make it harder for you to get the runaway merits.

Usually people who do escaping for merits either are in Car Dealership company, which provides escape button being always on; or use escape book which guarantees escape attempt success for 31 days.
Wiber [2065939]

This should be taken into account when planning your stat build. For example you may not want extra passives on strength and speed if you are using Frontline Fitness and trying to maintain some semblance of balance after passives are applied.

This has nothing to do with keeping the gym open and everything to do with what your effective battlestats are. For example I use frontline - so by using my education and some merits I passive boost my dex and def 25%. Voila, effective battlestats are balanced!

The majority of people who do runaways are fairly inept noobs trying to earn a living. The professional ones who work in a car dealership are still affected by this unit because as you point out the car dealership gives you the chance to escape 100% of the time. It does nothing for your chance at a successful escape.

The lucky few that get the book and have the knowledge to utilise it properly tend to charge premium prices for their services, if they can be obtained at all. Still I guess you will certainly be in the market if you complete this unit.

Incidentally the latest trend you may have missed is for two friends to partner up and do their runaway merits together. This unit would make these partnerships....awkward.

For example you may not want extra passives on strength and speed if you are using Frontline Fitnes.

Why wouldn't I want extra passives, I would take every passive possible to boost my stats. I would do every education to get all the merits associated with education.

I did my 1000 escapes while in Car Dealership and I never noticed that I would have had problems with people who have health education done.
Wiber [2065939]

At the risk of repeating myself yet again I will repeat myself yet again.

This has nothing to do with keeping the gym open and everything to do with what your effective battlestats are. For example I use frontline - so by using my education and some merits I passive boost my dex and def 25%. Voila, effective battlestats are balanced!

As far as your 1000 escapes in a car dealership, did you actually ask everyone you contracted to what educations they had done or are you just continuing to be facetious for the sake of it?
ArttiIsGod [1954421] Wiki Contributor

I mean I understand your point, but it seems unnecessary, unnecessary information otherwise in really nice guide.

Yes I asked to be sure if it makes difference. Because it would make difference also in money wise. There was slight difference, extra fail among 20 or 30 successful ones. But in the end difference was so small. And stat difference was from my million or less to 2 billion.
