I'm really just a bystander of this forum and my knowledge is basic and comes from watching tutorials, but I'll give it a try:

   First one:

The render is sick. you can do some really cool shit with it. IMO it's really missing some shadowing and prominent light source(s). It looks like you tried to incorporate light in the left-middle and maybe the top right, but it's not quite enough. Try to spot where the light hits your render and match your work accordingly. Also keep the lighting in mind when placing your metaballs.
When you're trying to create depth try progressively getting deeper, like in layers, i don't really know how to word it, but like, have your foreground metaballs at level 1, your render at 1.5-2, some of your background metaballs at 3 with some others at layer 4 and 5, and then your background image at level 6, if that makes sense. Yours is like the foreground metaballs and your render are at 2 (you probably didn't need to even touch the metaballs in front of the render), the background metaballs are at 4 and your background image is at like 6 or 7. If Gimp has a blur tool, try experimenting with giving some of the background just a little swipe once-over, and some other areas a twice over.
Your text is bad, but that can be hard af. The only person I've noticed that consistently has really good text is cl3ric0l, so don't feel too bad about that.

     First one, forum signature:

I f**k with this as a forum signature. The smaller image size covers up a lot of your small mistakes. The light source on the left works much better in this format for some reason, but it still feels like you're missing some light and shadows, maybe throw some light at the bottom-middle and possibly behind her neck a bit. Try experimenting with some gradient overlays and adjustment layers (curves, levels, exposure, etc.) and maybe a border, but the border is just personal preference and not necessary. Again the text needs work but i feel like you didn't come here for critique on your text.

     Second one:

This one's kinda out of my realm. I believe the first one has more potential. The depth and lighting are both much better. Could still use some shadowing and maybe another c4d or something in front of Drake. The white particles in the foreground look a little goofy, but look really good in the background. I like the haze effect. Both of your renders are too blurry, try just slightly blurring some of the edges that are further back, for example Drake's left shoulder and torso, maybe some of his head/neck, while leaving the rest of the render in focus. Don't cover up your text.

Overall, not bad. You've obviously watched some tutorials and done your due diligence. A lot of it is just experimenting, keep playing around with it. Props to you for posting your work and being willing to take criticism. I look forward to watching your progression!

Most of them tell you right in the description whether or not they produced it to he used freely or FREE like a Wallpaper or whatever. I knew that from the start. Jist never though of deviantart having resources like that.

EDIT: And if it didnt mention either I probably would not use it in a creation of my own unless I asked them or dropped a comment seeing if it was possible.

Nice Work -

Here is my CNC:  The font needs to stand out more.  I like that you are staying near the color scheme but the focus is on the "client"  and you want them to "pop".  I see what you are saying about depth - but really that is based on the artists perspective   Consider highlighting a focal point, say the face maybe.  Again nice work.

Graphic 2 -  Great job on your character.  He looks good.  The background is confusing and dark - not sure how it pulls together, other then being dark abstract.  The name needs to "POP" and pull it to the forward layer.  Good font choice.

Keep up the good work.

imo the thing i would suggest you focus on is your lighting/colouring...as spazzymcgee mentioned earlier....good lighting really sets off a piece.
having said that it doesnt mean you have to have light sources to portray every bit of light on your render....you can focus on 1 area and use the burn tool on the render to remove/darken down any other lighter areas.
the rest of your work is really comming on well.
also for pieces like this i dont agree the text needs to "pop" your focal is what you want the eyes focusing on, you can still be creative with text but in a way that it still doesnt become the main focus of attention.

Work on your lighting, right now it's more or less non existent. Use effect c4ds or fractals as a main light source to make shit easier(millions of these on google) and then angle them so they fit in to where the lighting is hitting your render. Also if you're gonna use black and white you need to add more burn dodge or gradient maps so that the tag doesn't look washed out and flat as a pancake. For depth don't use blur because that just lowers the quality shit loads, use layers i.e. a c4d then some effect c4ds on top or textures then another c4d above those layers and the depth will take care of itself, also if you get the lighting right the depth won't be an issue. Get rid of that horrid text too, make it as small and blended in as possible or you'll just ruin any tag you make (unless you're gonna put shit loads of effort into the text to make it look sick like cl3r's forum tag).

Thanks to you all, some great CC.

I didn't put much effort into the text, it was closer to just a watermark for the time being, but I understand the criticisms of it.

I will put in effort to improve my lighting first of all. I can worry about the text once the actual sig is the best it can be.

When you using the term C4d are you referencing "motion" graphics? I am not familiar with that term in regards to the context of what you are referencing.

Is the current trend for Torn abstract backgrounds?
