I got this event recently:

You have successfully referred watchou. Once they have validated, they will be added to your referral list and you will start earning rewards from them as they level up.

I've never referred anyone to this game. At zero days old they have 18ish hours activity time but all the other stats are zeroed out aside from 1 sent email.

What gives? NPC? Test account?

When a player signs up to the game there is a box that asks them who introduced them to Torn that works the same way as the search box - if they typed in a name then it would bring up a list of Torn players based on that search, with the online players coming up first after any exact matches.

So if someone maybe had a friend by the name of "lisa" or something similar and they started typing that they might have selected that name as it came up first. 

Clutching at straws a bit but it's a possibility - we do see this with some users with real names or players with names of areas that might bring people in.

I got an random referral last year. I messaged staff about it because I didn't want my account being associated with anything fishy. They monitored the account and eventually deleted it.

I had one a little while back, so I contacted staff and said I don't know this person, they said fine, and removed the referral. About an hour later I get a text from a son of my buddy saying he'd signed up to Torn, and used my referral....doh.
