If you're on Safari/iOS this may be because of the bug that auto completes the last crime you did when you fill your nerve bar up. i.e
1. you do some murders
2. refill nerve or use beer
3. go to click crimes again but you're already in hospital because it's attempted another murder automatically

Rest assured, the nerve isn't being lost, but simply used on the last crime you did, without showing you the result.
