A Short Torn Starting Guide-

Money:

When first getting started its best to complete the geotge missions and buy a piggy bank. Buying the piggy bank will give you a place to store your money indefinitely but, be sure no to smash it, you can't get another.
To get quick cash some people offer to buy certain things from bits and bibs at a high price. They buy the items from you and then sell them on the item market for minimal profit. It's called buying low and selling high. It's a great way to make quick cash. It's best to buy low and sell high yourself once you get a steady income.
Selling losses is a way to make a couple mill but at the expense of your win loss ratio. It's the practice of someone buying losses from you to boost their stats and then you getting paid. Don't do this unless you are prepared to later on buy losses to get your stats back. Always use your nerve on crimes. Refer to the crimes portion for more info.

New Player Chat (NPC):

Avoid using NPC as much as possible (as well as trade chat). You are more likely to be mugged or attacked from talking in NPC or trade chat than you are just staying out of it.

City:

The best places in the city when starting are Big Al's Gun Shop, Bits n Bob's, and the Item Market. In Big Al's Gun Shop you can any starter weapons, all ammo types, and some basic armors. Bits N Bob's is where you can buy cheap items and sell them on the Item Market for an increased price. And lastly, the Item Market, this is the place where most of your time buying and selling things will be spent. You buy anything and everything from there.

Factions:

Factions are great but don't hop into one too soon. Sometimes you mat be spending alot of time in the hospital. They are great for getting Perks for training, anti mugging, and other things. One thing to not do is put money in the bank until you can trust the people their. You may never get it back.

Jobs and Companies:

Get a starting job to build stats before you join a company. Yo uwill want the best stats possible so you can get a higher paying job. Yes, the pay at the starting jobs isn't the greatest its well worth the wait to get the better stats than the better pay.
Do not start a company before you are level 15. You may be running that company at a loss or spending most of your money keeping it afloat for a while until you start making minimal profit.

Education:

Getting the General Studies education courses out of the way first will help build your stats and help decresease the time it takes to complete other courses. From there it is really your choice on what education route you want to take.

Crimes:

When you first get started after the George missions you will want to shoplify from the sweetshop as often as you can. You will get some stuff to sell on the Item market for a really good price. 20k-30k a day if you are persistent. Yes you can do other stuff but some of it you need to build stats for and get a license for.

Leveling:

When leveling it is best to train your stats in the gym for exp. You gain exp from attacking and winning but don't mug, or hospitalized the target, leave them on the street. You gain the most exp that way. There are leveling target lists out there,
Baldr, a really great guy that built an entire list of targets (He also has some really in depth forum posts that will help you more than this might) that will give the most exp for lower level players. Don't go picking people out of NPC to attack, they will give little exp and are not worth the energy loss.

Conclusion:

Yes, there are better guides out there, this is just one to quickly get started with the basics of everything. I'm not the greatest at explaining things but I hope this helps.

There are now many 'beginners' guides to torn. No offence but I don't think this was really needed. Also, there's a few things in here that I don't agree with. The work stats given from education courses is negligible to be honest. Therefore, I wouldn't choose courses for that reason alone. The sports science classes are more important to complete as early on in the game as possible. This is because they give you a percentage increase to all future gym gains. In fact, general studies (aside from the driving licence course) are some of the least important classes you can take early on.

Another point to make is that you shouldn't be relying on crimes to make your money. Yes, stealing from the sweet shop is more profitable than stealing jackets, but it's not considered a "safe" crime. You WILL go to jail doing these crimes, regardless of how high your crime experience (CE) is. Going to jail too often will prevent you from increasing your nerve bar, which is required to do the more difficult crimes in the game. Not a good strategy if you want to eventually do political assassinations in your faction. You also shouldn't be stealing anything right after completing George's missions. You should work up to stealing jackets by completing at least 150 "searching for cash" crimes. Then follow those with at least 150 "selling copied media" crimes. Check out Nash's Crime Guide for the best advice on doing crimes.

Kobie, I greatly appreciate the feedback, those are just the routes that were taught to me and that have worked in my opinion, yes there are many starting guides this was a way for me to post a quick link to people who ask simple help.

I agree with kobie that work stats from education isnt a huge priority, they are just "nice bonus to have" kind of thing. I would highly suggest aiming for bachelor courses that provide more long term benefit such as sports science bachelor.

Also I really do not recommend starter jobs at all, joining a player company will give you alot more working stats in a shorter period because directors can potentially train you 75 workings stats every 2 days which is more than the measly 6 you gain per day from army starter job in addition you can get paid upwards of $150k a day if you find a generous director.

Do not shop at big al's gun shop for weapons/armor, item market is cheaper (you will still need ammo though)

Buy only beer at bitsnbobs to sell for profit

Crimes, Kobie touched on, but its it more beneficial to build that nerve bar, getting access to higher nerve crimes are much better than short term gains
