Alright guys so my buddy just gave me this computer he had.
when I turn it on it beeps five times. 5 long beeps pause 5 more beeps so on and so forth
when he went to upgrade the ram it beeped so he put the old ram back and still
beeps.
its an hp envy.
ive tried resetting the whole thing by taking the battery out and I tried resetting the ram and tested each stick by changing places and making sure it was fitting..
do I need a new motherboard or new ram?
excuse this cluster f**k of a post it's froday night and I'm pretty buzzed
So it beeps, but nothing shows up on the screen?
Maybe u can try the following:
1. using alcohol to clean the golden fingers of the ram
2. compressed air to clean the memory slot
3. keep pressing the F8 key to get to the advance option page, select the last correct config/ something like that
4. remove the coin cell and put in back on after maybe like 15 mins

Well normally you would look in the motherboards manual and lookup what the beeps means exactly.
However that's the fun thing here.
Its an HP, and being an HP, you wont ever find such. They dont make the motherboard, they just use any random. Your best bet would to actually open the system and looks for a motherboards name/brand on the PCB itself.
It being an HP also makes replacing the motherboard a huge pain since they like to use non standard form factors.
That is, if you would be talking about an actual desktop, and not a laptop, Envy can also be laptops.. you didn't specify it exactly ... if it is a laptop you are pretty much f**ked all together.
I think the guy who gave it to you knew about the whole problem of it being an HP to begin with, hence he ditched it.
It is an hp envy 700 desktop. I took it to the repair shop today and the guy tried new ram to no help.
it was a free computer so I’m gonna order a new motherboard and see what happens. Wish me luck
Well depending on the exact model, a new mobo might not even be worth it, also keep in mind they use weird mobos to begin with.
Having that said, you cant simply pop in a new mobo and expect things to work flawlessly, alll drivers will go bad and you will BSOD madly. You would pretty much need to re-install a OS just to avoid any issues.
