“When you try to change someone’s mind, the other person often feels attacked. Being proven wrong actually activates the same area of the brain as real physical pain. … Being proven wrong often hurts so much it causes a fight or flight response.”

I watched a rerun of Adam Ruins Everything last night, and he did a segment about why you can't really change someone's mind when they firmly believe they are right. Got me thinking about Torn, and why you see people defending some of the most stupid and illogical viewpoints in forums, even at the cost of their reputations.

I've been on both sides - defending an idiotic opinion even when tons of evidence supports the other side, and trying to convince people why they are a f**ktard to argue their side when the facts supported mine. And in the end, everyone is pissed off and nobody is left feeling like they won the argument...because nobody ever wins in these forums, except the trolls.

I like to be right, but so does everyone. And if we feel attacked when others try to change our minds, then we just get defensive and start slinging obscenities at each other...

Adam suggests presenting facts when you feel as though you're right, repeatedly if necessary...but to refrain from trying to force someone to see your point. Because in the end, isn't it differences of opinion that serve to encourage others to question the facts, promoting creative problem solving and a less boring world?

The forums don't need a bunch of sheep willing to be led by the likes of Champion and Dude. Form your own opinions, and let others have theirs...just share the facts and let them speak for themselves.

"No Officer, it's Hi, how are you?"

People are always free to be wrong, but that also means people are always free to call ya an asshole.

Potato, potato.

When married, your usually going to be wrong.

Be happy and wrong, or be right and be single

Doesnt matter in the grand scheme anyway

Interesting. I hate being proved wrong. Why can't people just accept any stupid opinion I put forth?

I mean it works for

Boris Johnson - He told people as a reporter that the EU only wanted straight bananas

Trump - Whatever he tweets lately.

If you say anything with enough confidence, there's going to be people who agree. I was under the impression that those people were a minority, but obviously there's enough to have gotten Trump elected.

Part of not accepting being wrong is the fact that a lot of people argue in bad faith. Like you said, people don't like feeling attacked but, sometimes people jump into conversation just to prove someone wrong. Some people have triggers and topics that send them into a fury. They've already learnt talking points for both sides so when they see an argument with one of their talking points, they jump in. Even I am guilty of this, to be honest. It gets even worse when people are confronted publicly or in front of people who respect them. Having a private conversation is completely different from having a public one.

Adam's pretty right about what to do but depending on the case, sometimes both sides can be right or wrong, it's just a matter of perspective.
