Currently in a fully upgraded Palace 2.4 k happy, can afford to buy PI but don't know if making the jumps worth it without having a large chunk of money to upgrade it to make a gain on happiness? Is it worth the jump anyways or not? I can upgrade a fair ammount and have staff ect any advice welcome

I would rent a PI, and keep the palace for the vault. There's no advantage in buying a PI.

PI's are so worth it. Even just renting one, you get an extra 10 carry items. With an airstrip/pilot, you pay one flat fee for travel per day, and saves 30% travel time.
Unless you want to keep making someone else rich by renting, I would grind it out to buy one, then you rent out your Palace, or sell it. You don't have to buy or even rent a PI that fully decked out. Look for one with just an Airstrip.

If you consider a PI as an investment it cost ~$975m for everything minus yacht, renting one of these will cost you $5m/week. This all works out to 3.7 years to BREAK EVEN, making it a pretty long time before you start saving money.
If you plan to play Torn long term then it'll be worth renting a good PI in the short term (they pay for themselves with the airstrip). Once you've maybe maxed out your bank and obtained a few stock blocks (or sorted out your own money making method) THEN you should buy a PI.

You need to be thinking about opportunity cost. That money invested elsewhere for several years IE FHG, SYM, LSC & TCHS will earn you way more than you would save on rent.
The only thing a player "needs" to think about is how *they* *want* to play. Not everything we want is the statistically/financially most perfect way of doing things.

Having different priorities than you doesn't make me an idiot. Not all games are about "winning" especially games like Torn that just keep going. It's more about playing the way you will enjoy. Not everyone wants to deal with renting.

Yes Torn is a game that keeps going on and people keep going past you because you don't get that optimising growth in all areas is how you stay ahead of the pack. If you want to play like it's a grown up's version of farmville go ahead, but don't be advising others to be useless unless they make a big bold statement to that effect.
