Just wanted to ask if it was worth level holding for the defend merit, if you don't need to travel to merch items. Only thing I can think about is drug addiction and life, but are there any more downsides?

Well apart from lvl unlocks (such as director of company at lvl 10 and traveling at lvl 15) you will miss out on level merits
Personally I dont think level holding for defends is worth it because most people will compare personal stats before deciding whether to attack or not.
What I do think makes leveling holding worth it is if you are ever jailed, getting busted out is so quick compared to when you are at a higher level.

most everything has been said by yolo. but also keep in mind high level low stats is not a good idea if you wanna be a frequent attacker stay low.
there are plenty of level 100s that get attacked daily possibly dozens of times per day. you dont have to worry about that now but down the road you wanna consider holding if your not strong. i would say be above 5billion total stats to consider being level 100. there are plenty of 100s at 1-3billion that do seem to get attacked alot. hell i use the weaker ones during chaining myself they give a 4.0+ respect without chaining bonus.
i would think your somewhat safe at most levels from 1-50 to level whenever as long as you know you have got maybe 500k x50 levels 25mill total. you cant really put a hard number on it because it is kind of a subjective thing. but i would strongly urge from my point of view to be in excess of 25mill or 500k per level if it was me i would hold for alot more per level but again tho just my opinion. do as you like.

You're gonna get the first defends merit regardless if you play well, and it's highly unlikely that you'll get the 5th one regardless.
Tailoring your entire style of play for 2-3 merits? Is it worth it? Short answer, NO.

I got more than 30 defends during elimination, thank to my level holding. I get occasional defends as well but fewer than I expected

as a level holder myself currently, the downsides are:
- less life
- missions become harder since your stats increase and you get put up against people with similar stats, yet they have more then double your life.
Even alot of easy missions are hard that way.

It is never worth it. Why?
1) LESS LIFE. You can have occasional defends but what you need is to win attacks when you want them. (You can always buy defends if you want the merit)
2) LESS MERITS. You need merits to improve your gameplay. Whether its passive stats or banking/awareness merits.
3) BUSTING. Lower levels means its harder to bust someone.

You need to get to L15 asap. After that, you should focus on stats, not level, but level up when it comes naturally.

I can tell that when a level 60 attack me and lose, which they would have not attacked me if I was level 80. My true level is 80 more or less btw
When you lvl hold crit hits almost always are your downfall.
If you want to play Torn on hard mode, you should level hold. If you want to be like everyone else, don't.
For the defend merits? No. It is very easy to pay for the defends. As you level up, you naturally become safer from getting mugged. You may actually save money by leveling up and paying for sluts. There is no need lvl hold for the defend merits.
If you have another reason, personal to lvl hold that would make the game more enjoyable? To each their own.

I highly doubt they exist. If they do exist they are just the people that don't know how to play the game. Always hit level up when ever you see it showing. You can get merits and buy merits when your level is higher and spend them on Leslie.

Antiquated mind sets level hold. When Ched rolled out Attacking 2.0 that was the death of any logic in truly level holding, as Life became a vital 5th stat.
Defends are over-rated.
Get at least to level 15.
Haven't advised folks to consider level holding until they're about level 70 to 85, and then to start looking at their HOF Rank on Level and Battle Stats and compare. Before that I wouldn't worry about it much unless you're having trouble having targets that give you good respect.
In the end, your game to play, but leveling holding is for people who need validation typically and not folks who are truly eager to be part of a faction team and contribute the best they can.
