Hello,
Ive been acquiring parts to build a pc for about a year now. Im almost complete but as time went on i learned a lot more about the pc world and im now thinking that my cpu i picked vs my hardware isnt as good. I personally dont know anyone that plays games on pc so i dont have anyone to ask. Hopefully a pro on here can give me input if i should sell and upgrade the cpu. The cpu would 100% be fine my gpu it wont bottle neck my cpu is compatible with my board. I feel like since i went all out on parts i maybe shouldve went with the better cpu.
PARTS LIST:
CPU: i7-8700k (maybe shouldve went i9-9900k? or i7-9700k)
MOBO: Asus Z-390 maximus xi hero
GPU: Asus strix 2080 or 2080 super (haven't purchased yet planning on buying end of December) also cant chose which one to get
RAM: Corsair vengeance pro 16gb ddr4
COOLER: Corsair h150I
PSU: Corsair RM850watt
Storage: samsung 500GB m.2 seagate 2tb HDD.
As you can see i definitely went with some of the best parts you can get but went with an older cpu. In your opinion should i sell the cpu and upgrade ? Any input on the gpu would be great too. I want a 2080 but i dont know if i should get the super or the strix.
Thanks
uh, what's your budget lol
You should ask on pcpartpicker because it has more enthusiasts. Also you should add more info, like what you want to do with it and your budget.
If you are interested in VR in the future you are basically all set. I dont believe you will need a more powerful cpu if you arent going to generate simulations.
Personally I think your gpu selection is overkill.
Really ?? That’s interesting ! Thanks for the input i appreciate it maybe I’ll look at the 2070 or 2060z idk why the people above said to list my budget when i already listed the parts lol thanks again
Most likely, if their line of thinking is the same as me, we are just in disbelief on how much cash you are willing to invest into a machine at once. Because the set up you are going for, is easily over $2k USD. Most of us are part of the "buy last generation parts" category since computer equipment gets obsolete quickly so buying the absolute latest generation parts is overkill in a sense.
I personally would buy the NVIDIA 1080 GTX.
But I will say this:
If your goal is to play games at Ultra 4k graphics at 3840x2160 resolution, yes there is merit getting a ASUS RTX 2080
I see thank you I’m learning a lot about this and I’ve noticed when i talk to veterans in the Pc world and tell them my parts (everything i listed i already own besides gpu) they tell me i don’t need this or that and i kinda understand why now. To answer your question I’ll prolly look more ridiculous but no I’m looking at either 1440p 144hz or 1080p 240hz. That’s a whole other problem in itself. Idk what panel to get now either.
By panel if you mean monitor, go with whatever size you are comfortable with. If in the future you decide your monitor is too small you can always sell it to someone or go for dual monitors (monitors dont degrade in quality as quickly as computer parts, Televisions are a good example).
For panel best for gaming is IPS, really good depth of colour and great viewing angles
Yeah that’s what I’m leaning towards now I’m just scared to get ghosting and bleeding like almost every monitor i look at the reviews and all complain of that but ppl also just complain in general. I just need to go where they have actual panels on display.
I'm currently in the same boat lookin to change my monitor as i've not long upgraded my PC, one's im looking at are LED which is still fine. And black friday is next week so just looking currently myself then see what's on offer :).
But agree people do tend to complain more then praise when it comes to comments, i'd also like to know if they have G-sync monitors also.
Have you put much thought into response time also? I'm aiming for <5ms
Edit:- This is the monitor I'm leaning towards getting currently

I’ve been keeping my eye on that monitor ! But yes i have there’s so many variables with monitors. I personally would like 1ms but that’s only on TN panels :/ but if i get a TN i get a shit picture lol so this is where most of my problems come from. I think 5ms or lower would be fine most people say you can really tell the difference anyways.
I just wish i could have 240hz IPS panel and 1ms that would be the perfect monitor. I want to play some games competitively where i would want 240fps and i also want to place story based games where i want a great picture. I think i just need to buy two monitors then i won’t have to worry about it lol
Yea I've read quite a few comments where people said this is my "single player monitor" that's bit much using two.
>5ms is perfectly fine and define "competitive"? Pro or just playing pretty seriously?
what r u gonna do on this pc. if its just gaming get an i5
Hey! thanks for your input. Yes its just gaming every part i listed above i already own so i got a i7-8700K im debating a i9-9900k. I dont think a i5 will work ill prolly bottleneck my GPU
oh alr
wait what frequency i the ram just curious
3000
Ah ok
Not sure if you've already bought it, but a Ryzen 5 3600 will push a 2080 without bottlenecking. Not sure about the i5, but there are other options besides just the i7. the 3600 is about $200+ cheaper.
Also, shoot for a monitor with 1ms response time.
