I think grocery is better since it improves your ws faster...
I know it sounds silly, given that you've just joined Torn, but have a plan in mind. Working stats are needed for some of the better jobs like teaching, law ect but to begin with but a grocers is a solid start.
That said, some player run starter business' will recruit to fill job slots. You could get a job in say an AN and earn a couple of evids a week which you then sell.
I'd also check out some of the guides, Baldr's starter bible is a must read for all newbs.

In the long run i think jobs that require high INT usually pay the most , i suggest working in a company that gives daily trains to boost your working stats or if you have the $$ you can even buy trains from willing company directors .
Not many high end players work in software companies because of the less beneficial company specials so from my experience they tend to hire people even at lower working stats.
