In the Beginning

Joined and got stuck in. Floated in and out of a few factions like most noobs do. Finally reached level 15 and as advised, advertised for a spouse to share a PI for the travel enhancements.

Pm’d out of the blue by Sharkeyfive with a very lucrative business arrangement of renting a 4.5k PI for free in exchange for a trip to SA for Xan each week (Xan cost was paid for, it only cost me my time), which I snapped up. Received a lot of help and advice with the game from Sharkeyfive.

Joined TRT to help out Sharkeyfive as a way for me to give back something for the help I had received. Met some awesome players at TRT, my spouse and ex spouse now faction friend. Finally just under a year ago I found home here at Phoenix Rising where I feel I could not have been luckier to end up and in the process, made even more friends.

If it wasn’t for the help and advice from such a long term player in my early days, I probably would have quit within the first month in all honesty. Much as I have grown to love Torn now, the first month was the hardest. Torn is a very complex game deep down, and sometimes the huge amount of information to digest, especially in a players infancy can be at times overwhelming. I’m glad I stuck at it now.

Edit: Forgot to add my funniest moment. To be fair, there have been many over the last year at Phoenix Rising but one that stands out the most was during one of our chains and one of our members HD0G wasn’t feeling very well during the chain.

He decided to upload pictures of his issue which was coughing up massive blood clots, and many in faction chat were bombarding him to get his ass to hospital ASAP. After a while and feeling very much worse than earlier he finally agreed to seek medical help but before he went, he had to make sure he dumped the rest of his Energy incase there was no way he could sign back in at hospital.

The funniest part was when the imgur images of his condition were uploaded, between members reaching for bucket to chuck up in, or others wanting to bleach their eyes, we totally lost track of the chain timer. With 30 or so seconds remaining in our final 100 or so hits Chef_Liam and ShepAdept made a panic hit to stop the chain from timing out. Absolute legends this lot here are!

What did you think of Torn in your very 1st. Week ?
I joined Torn City under the assumption it was a business/marketing/merchant/trading type of vibe because of the picture of the Executive in the login page, didn't bother reading anything else. Only until I went by the week did I see the misfortune of how the city was filled with crimes and violence and drugs and plenty of salt minerals. 1st day, got a gift box from someone that said "Armalite" but once opened, got bombed and in the hospital.

Who helped you at first ?
Mr. Faustus, and to this day is a helpful person. He's like a father, a brother, a mentor, a teacher, and a close friend.

Did you understand what to do ?
Not much, though I tried to stay away from violent side of Torn and asked Mr. Faustus how to go about the city peacefully, and few staff members and some older but nice folks in new player chat (staff and non-staffs), like Major_Motoko, Horrifica, and nemmy, and kimchi, and Joshua.

Did you find the first missions from George complicated ?
The assignments George provides are extremely easy, and I thought he would be a nice person too. He showed me my 1st home, a nice shack, how to get muscle on here and an education and a job on here (which I joined a Grocer). Then he taught me how to equip myself with weapons to defend myself but I was displeased and to this day, he wants me to attack someone named Test Dummy #3

Now you've got a big ol' thing in your hand to bash people with and you found poor little Test Dummy #3 [1500003], you gotta attack him and continue beating on him just for fun! Assumin' you trained hard in the gym, you're more likely to win a brawl. Fight to the end and win the battle to complete the task.

How long did it take you to understand the basics ?
It took me a good 3 and a half weeks to get the basics, and how to live in the city, resisting temptations, bits 'n' bobs, earlier found a pegleg and spent 10 days to sell it (from Boxer's Halloween Sales).

Share some funny and not so funny first moments
Funny: Someone was selling me an item called a cabbage head and I used to think it was an actual item in Torn, and spent $230 on it (he charged $10 per cabbage head). Real life it seemed like a lot, and was furious when I got a mail from the person saying that they couldn't deliver the cabbage heads from the following reasons:

Thank you sir for your patronage. I regret to inform you that, as we transported the recent crop through the Earth kingdom, a ragtag group of kids destroyed my cart carrying your cabbages. In light of these events, your order has been cancelled, without a refund.

As I said sir, a rag tag group of children destroyed my cart. I intend to press charges, although, at the moment, they remain at large. However, the police force in the Earth Kingdom is a solid, loyal group of men and women. I expect to hear of their capture shortly.

What did you think of Torn in your very 1st. Week ?
I was surprised at how easy it was to learn the ropes. I also couldn't stand NPC and largely ignored it.

Who helped you at first ?
Kapten_Klitoris took me under his mighty wing and brought me into buttgrass, There I was mercilessly mocked and browbeaten until I had learned the basics of training and crime.

Did you understand what to do ?
For the most part it was pretty self-explanatory. Where logic failed help and the forums filled in the blanks.

Did you find the first missions from George complicated ?
I actually don't remember the george missions.

How long did it take you to understand the basics ?
The very basics I was pretty quick to pick up, this isn't really a complicated game, and I've played other online multiplayer RPGs with similar learning curves.

You have made a lot of progress in the past couple of years! It is only onwards and upwards from here!

I couldn't figure out how I was supposed to move my character around. It was the first time I was encountering a text based game.

How long did it take you to understand the basics ?
Not very long since I love reading and spent several hours a day reading nearly all the recent tutorials and Q&A forum

Now I'm one of the leaders of our two factions and I'm online between 10-14 hours a day, trading since a month (and doing not too bad I must say) and I love the game

First week. I opened new player chat down, and also want to the forums, read all I could and can see on both...other users tho I was a restart cause of how versed I was in the mechanisms of the game...

Nodody did, with the knowledge gotten from the forums, I bought 100 flowers and sent to 100 active players with 5-10 bil NW, anyone that msged me I chatted till they sent 1m (*wink* cool right)

Pretty much did, by the third day

The tutorials said it all, and was/is self explanatory
... will be silly not to understand them.

Less than a week and I made my first 100m also at the same period, had thought of devious and duboius ways to get more (devilish grin)

Funny thing is: noobs calling u master, sir, lord. for helping them out of tight spots, lol
Not funny: when my first 20 bounties came due to calling out on stops to cyber bullying(learnt my lesson to sthu now)

Pretty sure I had no clue what to do and still don’t have a grasp on this game. But this is my current mentality, at least until MeanMike gets upset with me.

I ended up quitting for 5 years after playing. Then came back like 2 years ago.

My first day in Torn was pretty typical of a new player i think, except for the fact that I blew all my free refills on my 10 NNB to search for cash at the train station.... Did all the initial missions and spent my MP's on ammo for a gun i didn't have, bought 5 DP's to trade them for money, got scammed.

Maybe my first day was a bit rough, I almost quit but, came in contact with The_Skipper who took me under his wing. I told him my story about the DP's and he fronted me some cash to buy good armor. I'm pretty sure the faction he invited me to was called JFB or something like that, had to do with birds thats all I remember about the name but they were a good lot of people that I really enjoyed playing with. Taught me how to chain, stack E, happy jump, the works. Got the courage to buy more DP's and this time wasn't duped, again, thanks to The_skipper. After I was feeling more comfortable with the game I started to do some profile artwork, again, getting hooked up with clients from The_skipper.

I got to level 15 pretty fast, started to travel, finally got a PI and The_Skipper helped me upgrade it with his stock benefits. I never had any intention at first to leave the faction I was in but RL circumstances had me quit for about 3 months. When I came back I re-joined but something in the faction wasn't the same. I'm not going to point fingers cause it's in the past but it was no longer the faction for me. I decided to start my own faction and out of the ashes came Toxic Reign. The players I am involved with now are extraordinary and I enjoy every day I have the opportunity to be here and play with them. None of this would have been possible without the help and support of The_Skipper so...

Just a quick shout out to you buddy, your the reason i'm still here. Even though we don't talk a lot i'll never forget the help you gave me.

I wall sat my greenleaf ass for JFA and Elite in my first few days, during the TUN/Insurgent war. Spent my first days learning that I had thrown myself into the biggest shitstorm in the game without a clue what was going on. Met a lot of awesome people though and made it through the initial learning curve. Shoutout to Pops especially, he gave me a DP unprompted and helped explain a lot. Thanks ELITE and (while it existed) ELITE Retro for taking care of me in my infancy!

What did you think of Torn in your very 1st. Week ?
Well, this game was introduced to me by my friends while we were studying in a boarding school(we were too young to know what this game was about). We used to get net access twice a week and we simply logged into this game and collected bounties and did some other stuff which we thought would help us increase our level because we used to compete against each other to see who upgraded their level first.

How long did it take you to understand the basics ?
Too long. I used to log in once or twice a week which changed to once or twice every few months. I didnt know about xanax training till i was around 2900 days old and thats when i really got into the game and understood most of the aspects of this game.

I thought the game was really slow at first. I was a lot younger when I first started. In a sense it still is, but once you get higher there is a lot more things to do and gradually growing in-game is addicting. I actually love how chill this game is now. I wasn't really in to text based games before I discovered TORN. Funnily enough, I've completely lost interest in actual video games now due to getting older.

I remember selling losses in my first week and thinking I'd hit huge money, but to be fair as a beginner it really was. Crazy to how easy it is to get money now just by travelling and whatnot. It's so hard at first. I always try to help any new players with cash if I see them, as I know that little boost at the start of the game can do wonders.

I've took breaks, but the past couple of years I really got in to it and I've been active basically daily. I can't see me ever stopping either, unless the game closes down. It has basically become second nature to do my actions and travel. Gambling keeps things fun as well, even though I lose most of the time.

Two days into game. Almost no one helped me. I only know to train gym and search cash under fountain. Almost 1hour to know basic. Read tutorial and guides.
This game have a lot of words than my school textbook but it's pretty good. Love that

Just joined September 2017 stright to the massacre of Elimination. Yeah it was damn crazy hit train for a newbie. But with the help of The_Boss and other kind people and their donations from Rebel Front, idid quite good score and was so proud of it.

Yeah the interface is friendly and easy, also with the time you learn more and more.

It was fun , wish more missions of him trough.

Maybe a week,its good when you have friends to learn from.

I don’t think I made it through the first week. I quit in a few days maybe 3. I remember someone bought lollipops from me for like 100 bucks each when I bought em for 25 and I was really confused.

however I returned at the end of 2018 again and played for 3 months and understood everything with the help of someone and a faction. And I quit again and came back November 2019 again

CPrinceC and his faction, which I've been in since day 3. Could never stress enough how important the faction was for getting me over the learning curve.
