If scamming is legal, why is there a scam warning at the top of the screen?
Stop trying to make Torn extra safe. Take that crap down.

Well this kind of scamming probably isn't legal considering it says new accounts that suggests they are likely multis, but still there's no reason for a big banner announcement

Staff don't get involved with scams, staff don't refund scams and won't refund scams, but this situation does take up a certain amount of staff time, if it reduces that then it's 100% worthwhile.
They exist purely to either drive people away from the game or to profit out of legitimate players misery in Torn - something we'd rather do without.
Either way this isn't a permanent thing - we'll have it here a few days at most to see if this has any impact. This was a fairly extreme measure that I'd never implement for any standard "scam" as a game wide notice.
The scam it’s self isn’t legal as its impersonation which is a fed-able offence but I do agree remove it, players are getting wrapped in bubble wrap these days.
I don't know if it's a "stop putting the kid gloves on in this game" as much as it's alarming this scam works as well as it does, apparently. Like, how many faction leaders hop on multis to communicate with members? People who fall for this must be pretty crooked themselves.
On average it's resulted in about 500m of losses from players every day they've been active for the last 2-3 years.
It's not just money though, it also results in people making multis themselves, sell accounts or give away account details to people pretending to be their friends - which then costs us time in attempting to help them recover said account, with a good majority just being lost entirely either due to the fact that we delete the account because it was given away, or because they can never verify it once they've compromised it.
Is there a way to make this clickable banner lead somewhere with more info like this? I'm not sure just warning them not to trust people is enough information to stop it happening.
Just like the real life "hey [family member] here, new phone! Please give me $1000 I really need it right now". Astonishing that people fall for it, but where I live TV ads and warning messages under emails from banks and the government do seem to help raise awareness and prevent people from falling for it.
You can't fix stupid but you can limit the damage they do to themselves.
