If you pray twice a day for a week or two you get the merit Forgiven. Make sure there's about a six hour gap between each prayer.
Is that all it does for me bcc there's a book that boosts something for praying but what does it do?

Just like real life, praying is only beneficial if you believe it works. Or something like that, anyway.
What book? Are you thinking of the enhancer item "rosary beads"? 10% more effective praying? I think it means that you can get the merit associated with praying slightly faster.
