It would be nice to have the ability to upgrade your properties without living in them. Can this become a thing?

Yeah; it's kind of annoying. If you were to upgrade your house in real life, you'd be hiring sub contractors to do work that may well be while you are or are not personally home.
For ex: I occasionally work with my father in law setting tile; we've been left in houses for hours to work while the homeowner isn't there.
Perfectly reasonable to think someone could be installing a Pool while we're not at that particular property.

Upgrades come with upkeep, the system wants everyone to pay upkeep. If I remember correctly, if you still owe upkeep, you can't move out. Unless upkeep is automatically subtracted from everyone bank account, I don't think this will become a thing.
Having to move out to upgrade a place to rent out just to move back to a previous property is annoying.
