I was chatting to a friend when someone else initiated a chat with me, this resulted in my friends chat box vanishing, I clicked on there profile and the chat icon but nothing happened, I was able to send mail and even open chat with others..
After chatting to Rhino he suggested to go into the people tab and delete the friends name from there. That seemed to sort the issue.. It was suggested i file a bug report.

It is rare for such a thing to happen. If you have non-functioning chat button, your best bet is to check your other devices (most likely a phone) for an open chat window with said person which you had left open hours ago. You need to close it there and the chat button should start working again. Clear your browser's cache in case it is still not working. This happens when chats aren't synced between two devices.

I tried all the above and nothing worked. chat box was open because we were chatting and hadn't been left open for any lengthy period of time. It vanished as soon as someone else initiated a chat with me.

Are you able to replicate the issue if you follow the same steps again? Or is it just a one time thing?

Just had chat box disappear again and then unable to open a chat with that person, followed steps as mentioned above and seemed to sort it. For something that is rare to happen this is the second time now in a month.
