Hey everyone,

I guess this is just a PSA to tell you guys a bit about Mafia.

What is Mafia?

Mafia or Werewolf as it's sometimes called is a game where an informed minority is pitted against an ignorant majority. Each night, the informed minority (often called, the mafia) kills a member of the majority (often called the town) and in the day, the town (which is also the town and mafia together) decides who to lynch in efforts to stop the killing before it is too late. In addition to town and mafia, there may be nuetral players who might have their own goals to accomplish before the end of the game. The game ends when either the town or the mafia has eliminated all threats to their team.

Why am I bothering you all with this?

Over the years, Torn has developed a community of Mafia players. I'm just here to let you guys know we exist and we're always open to having more players join us. If you don't know how to play, don't worry, we'll teach you. The only thing you need is a willingness to learn, a love of problem-solving and good sportsmanship.

Why play Mafia?

Well, for one thing it's fun. For another, it encourages problem-solving. Despite what it may appear as, small clues based on players words and actions are given throughout the game, being aware and analytical are very handy when it comes to finding success. If you ever play as the mafia in particular, you might find quick thinking underpressure and the ability to be convincing to be helpful as well. If you don't have these skills, don't worry, they can be developed with time.

Joining mafia is also a chance to make new friends. Right now our active community is fairly small so it's like Cheers where everyone knows your name. Our members are spread out across various factions around Torn and across various countries around the world. We're a diverse group united by our love of one game.

We're also apolitical and non-hostile on all fronts. Maybe, for example, you're currently engaged in that Vinerri vs MMCP war, that wouldn't matter to mafia because all the Torn drama gets left at the door. We're only interested in Mafia and the joy it brings us. Joining could be a chance to cross boundaries in Torn you might never have crossed otherwise.

How does Torn Mafia differ?

Creativity is another reason to join us but I thought the uniqueness of Mafia on Torn deserved its own section. There are several types of mafia games played on Torn. First, there is the normal mafia which is very mich like any other mafia game; a town, a mafia and nuetrals with few players having abilities. A role madness game is a game where every player has an ability unique to that player. And lastly, a bastard game is a game where the host lies to players and might even be a player himself/herself. A game may be any one of these or a combination of these. Each game is governed by a set of rules. There are a few rules that are ubiquitous but outside of those rules, each host may create their own rules to suit their game. The limits as to how many games can be created and played is as great as the imagination of the various hosts.

Speaking of which, anyone is allowed to create and host a game once they become part of the community. To avoid overtaxxing the community, we usually host only one game at a time. If you wish to host, you only need ask and join the queue.

Currently, we seem to be developing a spectator section of Mafia too where players not playing a game will still read and watch the game. Hosts sometimes create a discord chat so spectator can chat and speculate without disrupting the on-going game. So if you miss out on joining, ask the host about being a spectator.

Follow-up

So if what you've read sounds good to you, feel free to sign up for a mafia game. You can find us in the Fun and Games section of the forums. However, please note that if a game is already in progress, you may not join so you'll have to wait for the next one.

The current game, Midnight Mafia is being hosted by MentalStillness [2099952]. There is still room to join.

Or come hang out with us on discord. We don't bite... unless our abilities let us.

Sometimes we get emotional since we all like winning but there are few things you can do to make us not want you to play with us. Hurt feelings over games are usually forgotten sooner rather than later. Come back and try again.

It's a lot different when you're in the hot seat and it takes different people different amounts of time to find their stride. Some players do really well as town but terribly as mafia and vice versa. It's all part if the learning process.

Well I was an obvious noob for mafia game at that time n ppl knew that. So the idea was I had to be as obnoxious as possible and anyone who tried to save me and tried to lynch my partner would be red flagged. Because the bad guys should knew I was not a bad guy and I would be the best person to keep around. I caught the last bad guy tho lol.

Yes, several places.
Yes and played a few
Depends, a lot of the people running em are right wankers. The players here are generally pretty bad at it which makes it a bit rough on both good and bad players but w/e. Seems poor/fake logic wins out a lot more than actual sense here. In addition, there seems to be a trend of mass reveals which is lame. Maybe a rule where you can only reveal/fake reveal WHILE on the chopping block (top 2 being voted) would help curb the mass noobness.

In general, don't think I'd enjoy playing it here these days due to the mass "this is my role hurdurr" swaths by day 2.
