Most states in Australia you have to pay for yourself .

Unless its **** or incest , people should pay for their own abortions is my opinion.

Hmm. Apparently you can;t multi quote on these forums? Ohh well.

A few random thoughts.

First: The hypocrisy among the republicans is rife. No matter how you want to sugar coat it, this is a complete reversal of their stance out of opportunism.

But. 1) The dems are just as bad (completely reversing THEIR stance out of opportunism.) 2) Which underlines they are all just opportunistic bastards

Second: I would not be worried about roe vs wade being overturned. I doubt this appointment if it happens will do that. What I would be worried over (if you are pro-choice as I am) would be more pro-choice rights being limited or 'clipped' on the edges. You wont simply see a huge overturn of roe-wade cause most republicans dont actually want that for political reasons. You will see the nature of abortion law modified and changed though.

Third: Not sure what this does for the election or which side it will motivate more. My instinct says the dems... but then can they get agrier? Dont know.

Fourth: I dont consider it forgone the repubs nominate her. We know the republican senator from alaska won't vote with trump. There's at least a couple of moderates in close elections that could go either way (Susan collins and whats his face from colorado) and Romney is always a wild card and hates trump.

Fifth: I also don't know if odds improve post or pre election with a lame duck senate. I.e is someone like susan collins more pressured now because she needs to not alienate maine republicans before the vote to even have a shot? And after the election if she loses she'll be like 'to hell with it' and not vote? Or is it the reverse and if the vote is held post election she no longer has to worry about moderates and is freer to back repubs? Honestly don't know.

And obviously trump is picking someone and the process is starting pre-election but considering how long these things go on for and that there is a lame duck senate its certainly possible the actual VOTE will happen post election. Depending how much they rush and how much dems delay

I know you haven't been at the table for very long but SCOTUS has always been like that. Everyone on is Catholic or Jewish. It's literally almost impossible to find someone in law that isn't religious.

That shade you threw was your freebie for this week.
PurpPurp [1990116]
Wasn't throwing shade. Just explaining the situation. I'm not exactly excited about it either but Catholics and Jews took over law. That's just how it is right now
Bhappychap [2270497]
Ah, but its easy to find people that didn't attend religiously extreme groups. I would say most people that have their faith, do so quietly and respectfully.

If youre attending activists groups for extreme ideas, and signing things sayjng men have complete control...thats not your run of the mill Christian suburban housewife...

When Obama was in office and trying to push through his pick, the SENATE was in Republican control. It is the SENATE'S job to confirm or reject supreme court justices. This is completely different than today where Trump is president and the SENATE is in Republican control. This isn't hypocrisy at all, they are fundamentally different situations. Obama never had the mandate that Trump has.

There's a 20 point margin indicating the winner in November should nominate.

Murkowski and Collins said they wouldn't support, Gardner and Romney indicated they'd be open to a vote. Romney in particular is kind of ludicrous given he voted to impeach, how he reconciles that stance is anyone's guess.

For Saya:

Thats bsy and anyone watching 2016 unfold knows it. I dont doubt at some point a couple of them may have technically said that, but the vast majority were simply saying the people should be heard from first, not some complicated thing about if the senate is in the same hands as the president.

Just like all the dems were saying the president should always put forward a candidate.

Lets not kid ourselves. In both situations its pure political opportunism not any actual morality. Call it like it is and ive less issue with it. Its "yeah, it wasnt to our benefit then. It is now." Simple as that.

I don't doubt the repubs have every legal right to pursue their candidate but to not chuckle at how they (and the dems) have so quickly switched arguments? Yeah that partisan I am not.

All politicians are hypocrites. Just another example. But my memory does go back more then 4 years (and again its not like the dems havent all decided to fight for the exact opposite of what they said then too)

for Sagramor:

TBH I dont... care? Not should anyone really other then maybe as a political calculation for trump on whether he wants to risk pissing voters off (and then its his decision). Supreme court justices arent selected by the voters. And that's a deliberate decision not a bug. And one I agree with for that matter.

I do fully agree with you its not a lock it will pass. Its looking likely mind, and I suspect Mitch wouldnt call for a vote if he hadn't polled his caucus and thought he HAD a vote. But certainly a couple of people swing under pressure and things come undone. And Romney and Gardner are the likely targets of said pressure.
Remilia [1284087]
Sorry, all I hear, " is waaaah no fair."

This whole thing is only happening because the Democrats removed the senate filibuster back in 2013 when Obama held all 3 branches of the government. Without that change having been made, no Trump supreme court nominee would have passed without 60 votes. Both sides are hypocrites, but the Democrats can go eat a dick on this.
OsRavan [2492713] Committee Committee
Then you aren't listening very closely tbh. Lol im not going 'waaah'. I... honestly... don't really care other then from an abstract academic interest. You seem to be mistaking me for someone more partisan than I am. I actually for that matter think the republicans should appoint a justice.

The republicans have every right to pursue this. More power to them. I would in their place.

I would hope as intelligent beings though, we (on all sides) can not let our self interest blind us to hypocrisy. Two things CAN be true here.

The republicans legally can certainly do this. And its certainly in their self-interest. And I dont think theres anything morally wrong with it either for the record.

But it *IS* hypocritical. And somewhat hilariously hypocritical its so over the top.

And again the dems are just as bad if that makes you feel better. Since all the same people pounding on the podium about how a president has a *duty* to nominate a justice four years ago are suddenly "let the people decide."

I would hope Saya, that your politics leaning one way or the other wouldn't prevent you from being able to point out hypocrisy on your own side when it exists. TBH one of the problems in the US system currently is it has become so partisan that folks aren't able to recognize when their own side sticks their foot in it (if thats even what happened here).

Whats so horrible about saying "Yeah, it was mostly political spin with Merrick. And sure its a little hilarious to watch all our politicians turn themselves inside out within 4 years. But hey, this is what I think is best for the country in terms of supporting another judge so I want them to go for it."
MachineGunSteve [184119]
I have no problem with most of what you wrote here.

More often than not in these forums, one is likely to get a ration of shit from everyone when one can see both sides of an argument. It matters little which side you tend to. What matters is for you to pick a side and stay on that side, and never ever ever stray, or you become an apostate, and must therefore suffer the slings and arrows, accordingly.

I could be wrong.
OsRavan [2492713] Committee Committee
Umm. dude. Did you read what I posted? I literally said the democrats would do no different.

I quote "And again the dems are just as bad if that makes you feel better. Since all the same people pounding on the podium about how a president has a *duty* to nominate a justice four years ago are suddenly "let the people decide.""

I agree. The dems are no different. Every republican that was for holding Gardner up is being a hypocrite now. Every Democrat who was for voting for Garden is being a hypocrite now.

::grins:: seems like our gov is just full of hypocrites.

TBH it also seems like Init is correct. Folks here seem more interested in picking sides then having a conversation. so meh, ill probably go back to ignoring this forum. Last thing I need is more partisan bickering (again from both sides lol)
Remilia [1284087]
Compared to the pedo's, child murderers, violent arsonists, and rioters who support the left, "my side" is f**king perfect.
