If you expect to come back sometime in the future (doesn't matter if it's a year or two), buy tons of BBs so you're making money while away, stop living in a PI to avoid upkeep debt once you're back, and get a job in one of the city jobs, army is the most popular choice since you can use the JPs to raise your strength by a lot once you hit the stat cap.
If it's permanent and you're sure of it, liquidate your assets, buy tons of supplies and give them to your faction and friends as a last farewell gift.

OK, here are my top tips, which I'm sure most people will disagree with
"Can I have your stuff?"
- Move to one of the city jobs, Army will give better battle stats when you come back etc
- Move into your shack, otherwise Duke will be after you for millions in unpaid upkeep
- Sell everything that you own and buy Stock Blocks for the dividend payouts, ie Hospital, Casino, HRG etc. This will give you a load of stuff to sell when you return to the game
- Put the rest of your money in the Caymans, that way it's constantly earning interest
- Fly abroad, and then log off - after 24 hours abroad people can no longer attack you, except for Duke Missions

The education starter job would actually be best for battle stats long term. This is due to the large increase it provides to your working stats. That allows to you get a decent wage working in company which can fund happy jumps or Xanax. In addition to this it allows you to join a company with decent specials.

Sometimes we just want the instant gratification that comes with doing something brash, but let's face it. If it's not the right decision with zero emotion weighing on you, it's not the right decision. Think everything though.

If you're actually wanting to quit the game, then liquidate all your items, go max out your duke loan, and then give that cash to your friends. Or bounty your enemies for weeks. Or gamble it. Or buy a bunch of poison mistletoes and wreck your enemy's happiness. Or... whatever mark you want to leave before you go.
