there is an awaremess upgrade in the awards upgrading menu, it says it makes it easier for you to find items in the city. how do you find items in the city?

zoom into the map and look around for little bubbles with items in them
Increasing your Awareness through merits, job specials, education etc. slightly increase the chance of items spawning in the city for you to find.
Each day at a set time there is a chance that an item will generate on the city map. This item will be specific to you, ie no one else can take it and it will stay on the map until you pick it up. You need to be logging in each day.
Items spawn at midnight!
The only exceptions to this rule are event-relatrd finds, ie love juice and green stout - but other than that, everything stays until you pick er up

So leaving items on the map won't increase your networth, should you wish to keep it low for whatever reason.
I've had items spawn at other times than midnight. I'm very certain that spawn time is completely random.
