I have finished most of the history courses, but I am unsure how to search for and find artifacts and coins. Was hoping someone could give me some advice.

It's the daily random city find.. You can't actually search for it..
The education just unlocks it so that the item is now available..

When you click the "Map" tab on the City page, you are taken to a map of Torn. Every once in a while items will appear on that map and stay there until you click them, at which point they go into your inventory.
What the history education does is add a couple of valuable items into the pool of items from which the game decided what item to spawn. Don't worry about it, even with high awareness, it's extremely rare.
Also, entering or refreshing the map page doesn't increase your odds of spawning an item. You can just check once every few days/weeks/months
