I suspect this game wouldn't be nearly as fun without the friends I've made. The guidance I've got from friends has been really helpful - advice, targets, or even just heads up about stuff that's happening has been huge.
I had a friend lend me money to help me get more bank interest to get to 2b of my own money in the bank. That was hugely helpful!

I have made some real friends through this game. The social aspect of the game is what keeps me going. There are some people I thought didn't give a damn but ended up still being cool, and there are a handful I thought were cool but ended up being cold hearted bastards.
Take your time trusting people who you may never meet.
I've several people I would consider friends. People who've helped me along the way, and people that I help in return. Not so much material help, but help knowing how this or that works.
I feel these people are invaluable and really increase the enjoyment I receive from playing this game.
If you are speaking of friends on the friend list, I don't think I have any of these people there. Friend list is reserved for leveling targets and such.
