One of the greatest Concern of your average Torn player is 'Picking up a Job'.
Today, I decided to bring this guide to help as many people as possible.
Note: This would be a simple FAQ module. The information I gathered is from various interviews with some directors, articles and Wiki. The views expressed under are my own thoughts and it is advised that you don't jump to conclusions. And, I am just a message away to clear any doubts you might have, within the limits of my knowledge.
Which is better? NPC Jobs/ Player Companies?
NPC Jobs (Medical/ Education/ Law) are necessary at some point of your Torn life, for their exclusive benefits. But, as the requirements are a bit higher, you should first join player companies. You can forget about the other three (Casino/Grocer/Army), except for the 'Affronted' merit. Because there are better alternatives.
At what age, I can join a player company?
Day ZERO. Till you get into your preferred player company, join Army/ Casino/ Grocery immediately. Now, start searching for the companies of your liking.
If you are a Day Zero player, join in one of the above mentioned job and come back to leisurely stroll through this guide and make your choices.
What should be my preferences, while choosing a company?
It is purely based on personal play style.
But, if you feel that you are at a state where you can not decide upon your own preferences, let me give you some options.

If you can't fly yet (below level 15), and you are power leveling (which is the best way), join in a company which is useful for either paying the PI with Airstrip rental, or which can help you in getting more out of your trips.
Ex: Adult Novelties, Flower shop, etc...
If you can't fly yet, but not leveling up quickly, first secure a way for money. Join in a company which gives out salary or the specials can make you money.
If you can fly, you must be able to compare the company specials below and can be able to decide on your own.
How to find suitable companies for my work stats?
Your work stats are available at Home Page. And compare them from the below list. As the community is growing, many directors are welcoming players with ZERO work stats in to their companies.
Ex: Sweet shops, Adult Novelties, Flower shops, Property broker, Firework stand, and many high tier companies at 1* also.
How to read this?
The color coding is given according to the work stat ranges to job requirements. If your work stats is in a higher color than the company you want to join, that means you would be able to meet all positions' requirements for that company in that stat.
Various companies are given under multiple categories, which represent that there is a job with requirements in the given category of work stats.
EX: Take Zoo, there are jobs which would only need work stats at the range of 2.5k to 15k and also more than 40k.
By checking this table, you can also try to squeeze in to a higher benefit company. Though the final decision would be up to the director.
How work stats work?
- When you meet the requirements of a certain position of the company. Your work stat effectiveness for that position will be +90.
- From there, with each doubling of the work stat, you get +5 extra effectiveness.
- The higher your effectiveness the higher money you can generate for the company.
Ex: If a position needs 1000 END/ 500 MAN and you have
1000 END/ 500 MAN = +90
2000 END/ 500 MAN = +95
2000 END/1000 MAN = +100
4000 END/ 500 MAN = +100
and so on.

What are all the different types of specials?
I categorize them under five headings and the comparison charts with remarks over different specials is available in the below.
1) Passives
2) Items for JP (Job Points)
3) Services for JP
4) Renewables for JP (They will usually come through time while playing)
5) Stats for JP
Which of the above should I consider the most?
Again it is a perspective choice. But the general consensus is,
If you are highly active, choose a company with good renewables for JP.
If you are moderately active, you can choose a company with good items/services for JP.
If you are battle related, a company with good Passives or Stats for JP would be a good choice.
Again, it is a personal choice.
What is the best way to search?
The most quick way would be.

Start messaging all the directors from above downwards. (Always start from 10*. And even if there is no 'hiring' tag, some directors may be in need of new employees)

How to send an application better?
Always include your work stats. Be polite. Clearly specify about your length of stay (do not lie. Being professional and explaining helps you more.).
And say that you will be active everyday and will keep your drug addiction in check.
And say if at all you want to leave, you will leave always on a Monday. (this helps a lot)
And, Finally be true to what you have said.
Ask about the training routine, How much efficiency loss due to drugs is permitted, how much efficiency loss due to inactivity is permitted, Salary, if there is something more that is needed.
Opinion about train buying?
Only spend money on trains, when you have excess than your daily necessities. The cost can be as low as 50k per train to as high as 600k per train depending upon the luck and company type and daily trains availability.
What is the basis of companies' categorization in Torn?
Company specials are usually based on the work stat requirements. Which is more focused as the longer you play the game the higher your work stats would be. the higher the work stats, the better company will hire you. The better the company, the best would be their specials.
And, companies cater to almost all kinds of play styles at all levels.
