with more than twenty different witnesses taking the stand spanning over eight long days, this trial seems never-ending - and of course it does, the topic is currently a worldwide hotbed.

this is not a smear campaign for either side, just an opening of a dialogue that i haven't yet seen on the torn forums:
do you feel that George Floyd's toxicology report is relevant in this case?
do you think Mr. Floyd's drug use will be used to acquit Derek Chauvin?
what do you think the ramifications of Chauvin being acquitted would look like?

here are my thoughts:
Mr. Floyd's report showed that he had 11 ng/ml (or .0011 mg/l, or 1.1 micrograms) fentanyl in his system. this is often the talking point for people defending Chauvin - Floyd's breathing would have been already impaired by the drugs and thus it will be easier to let Chauvin go free of his most severe charges. according to multiple sources (i have more if need be), however, it takes at least 100 micrograms of fentanyl to be even in the relative zone of risk.
i feel that the punitive justice system has a really good way of freeing people in authoritative positions, sometimes to save face and other times simply because they can, and this may be one of the first cases where an officer may be held accountable.
no, Mr. Floyd was not a saint. he had drugs in his system and was in the act of committing a crime when the police were called on him. but did that justify Chauvin's actions, to kneel on someone's neck for so long? do you feel like excessive force was used?

i am here to juggle thoughts about this! thank you :)

We all saw the video of a cop holding the knee on his neck using excessive force, suffocating a man, whatever the details are, this was for the whole world to see.

Most of the times cops actually get away with this kind of behavior, I really hope this case will be different and a warning to cops that this kind of behavior will be punished.

That's pretty much the reaction everyone had. But this trial has brought forth more than enough reasonable doubt that will no doubt lead to acquittal.

A medical professional said that the dose Floyd had in him was indeed enough to cause hypoxia and death. WAS it why he's dead? Was it the Cop? Who can truly say at this point. Maybe Floyd would have lived had he not been on drugs. Maybe he would have still died.

Things are never black and white. And this situation is a mess.
Sannemander [2088627]
Yeah well, that's not what everybody saw. Of course the defense tries to blame it on anything else than the cop, but again, that's not what the world saw. They saw a cop with his knee on his troath while he was saying I can't breath. I hope the jury won't fall for those external arguments.

I really don't have to ask me those questions because I've seen it, so in this case I'd say it's all black and white.
ZickyJackz [497258]
I'm guessing you haven't seen the full video. He was saying he couldn't breathe from the start. Suggesting that the drugs were effecting him. But he denied being on drugs. So the cops did not give aid.

Justice system is flawed. The waters are too muddy.

Please enlighten me! That's what this post is for. I'm not a toxicologist, or even a scientist, but to use that amount of fentanyl to acquit Chauvin is ridiculous.
masky [2659704]
so this is why we debate these kinds of things - for different perspectives.

i believe that to be Black in America right now, a simple confrontation with the police is enough to heighten one's anxieties. Is it possible that Floyd knew that any encounter with the police might be his last encounter with anyone, leading to a difficulty of breath, possibly assisted by his drug use? maybe. Is it possible that maybe Floyd was not in the best of health and someone kneeling on his neck and chest would have made it difficult for him to breathe from the start? maybe. it is muddy - but even in the case where someone says "i haven't been using drugs", police (especially in metro areas like MPLS, believe me i lived there) are prone to disbelieving that right off the bat. that aside, imo Chauvin's actions were totally unacceptable. especially with the crowd asking Chauvin to ease up.

what about the other officers? what charges do you feel that they should face?
Bhappychap [2270497]
The question being asked would be "Would George F be alive today if he was sat in the back of a police car and his neck wasn't leaned on for 9 minutes?"

And a questions for that is "Was there enough Fentanyl to OD?"

Answers, Yes George F would be alive today, and facing whatever criminal charges had his neck not been leaned on for 9 minutes. Because he did not have an OD level of Fentanyl (as the doctor stated in the trial)

This may be muddy to you because that is the defense's job, that does not mean the waters are actually muddy.

Basically, you have to put a real person in this position to see if they lose oxygen.

The knee on the back of the neck does not prove that it was the major factor to his death. You have to look at the position of the arms in conjunction with the weight of the Officers, and the concrete.

No, actually there has been more evidence which proves Derek was in the wrong then there has been to prove he wasn't. They had about 10 expert witnesses from PD trainers and officers themselves that have all testified the amount of force he used and the way he used it was wrong.
SaintLuke [2220265]
according to the guy testifying atm, you can prove it was a major factor. Since it would limit your ability to breath by taking away the capacity of your lungs. Believe the guy said it was 40 something % of his lung capacity lost with the way he was held on the ground.
SaintLuke [2220265]
i feel the guy in the middle should be charged with man 3, while the guy who was holding the legs should not be charged at all. The guy on the end was asking the higher ranks if they thought they should sit him up and what not. Which shows he at least tried.
SaintLuke [2220265]
problem is, if folks would actually listen and pay attention to the facts they would realize that this trial has gone about as bad as it could for Derek. Though i have a bad feeling he might still get away with murder.

Yep. It's true.
