About 180M items have been trashed, and about 46.5M items have been fished out. That means that there is currently 133.5M items in the dump - the dump is massive.

Almost all items in there are useless. I think that it would be fun to see what would happen if the dump was completely emptied. I'm not saying that people should be fishing out Armalites, GAKs, and combat armour out of the dump, nor that every time a dump search will yield something good. The goal is to have a decent percentage, like 1%, of the dump's items being half-decent, like M16A2s and FBAs.

Noobs go in with the expectation of the dump being something worth their time, like George from the tutorial implied - "old guns" and all that. But there's nearly nothing good in there, just bunches of flowers, jackets, and fruitcakes.

The idea is that on an announced date, the dump should be completely emptied of all items, and a few thousand selected items will be placed in the dump, with 75% of it being trash and 25% being decent. For example, the trash could be hard drives, fruitcakes, etc, and the decent stuff could be MP9s, AUGs, Kodachis, Bulletproof Vests, LSDs, etc. Low to mid-tier gear.

Best thing that happens is that there's actually some worth in searching the dump afterwards, instead of just being a complete noob trap. Most of it will still be crap, but there's just a little more chance of getting a gun or something out of it.

Worst case, the dump is still full of useless stuff, but a lot of useless items get taken out of circulation.

Either way, there's nothing really that bad that could happen from it. Why not?

They do dump decent stuff in it around holidays. And people do at random as well.

If you'd like there to be nice stuff in there for noobs, go buy nice stuff and dump it in there.

Brb dumping my 11k jackets.

We were just talking about this in faction chat the other day. The dump should definitely be emptied out from time to time.

Check City Hall, in the City screen. Item Statistics (on the right) says that today, 180M items were trashed.

In fact, I'll edit my post to reflect this more accurately.

Edit: Turns out that the City Hall page represents the total number of items dumped/fished out. This means that there are 133.5 million items currently in the dump.

[background color=var(--bbc-body-bg-color)]In the last 24 hours, about 180M items were trashed, and about 46.5M items were fished out. That means that in the last 24 hours, 133.5M items were added to the dump. That's 133.5M every day - the dump is massive.[/background]

That is wrong. Those stats are total in all that's recorded. So 180m items have been trashed and 46m items have been found in the total history of Torn.

Still I'm not sure if those items are taking up any special space, but I think deleting 20% of the dump items that are valued under $1k every month would be nice.

Also another misconception about dump is that more cheap jackets in the dump means it's harder to pick up a more expensive weapon. If there are 1 million jackets, 100 kitten plushies and 1 xanax in the dump, you would still have 33% to pick up the Xanax. The system picks and item from the list first and then chooses a random one on the pile of that type.

BTW, nobody should ever do dump searching unless a player has announced they put a ton of stuff in OR around Christmass time, when Duke is dumping stuff in his 2 week period.

Its literally dump, and it IS a trap for newbies. U cannot expect people or devs to make it so that u get something valuable out of it.

Actually, is huge amount of trash in dump affects server load or not? Ched added a warning about items in inventory.
What about 133.5 million items in the dump?
SirEdge [2609907]
My understanding from the posts at the time were that the dump doesn't load everything in it like inventories do, so the items there aren't a server load problem.

And whether or not you intended to, I think you just hit on the biggest reason this suggestion is problematic without developer assistance- unless we used a ridiculous number of SEDs, the number of low value items that would simply go to sit in people's inventories (and accompanying server load) to accomplish this goal would be crazy.

If everyone stops dumping items and all the most active players (about 12k players) use all their e to empty the dump (55k-56k e each) we can have this thing emptied in 20-30 days, depending how many OD's and extra e sources we use.

Want it empty? Buy a DB or GAK (make sure your net worth updates, tell everyone you've dumped it (make sure your net worth updates) even though you've given it to me for safe keeping. Wait until the dump is almost empty then I dump it for you for someone to find.

This is a perfectly good use of a $25b+ and 672m energy.
