I’ve been having issues with chat disappearing when I have more than one torn tab open in my browser requiring me to close the browser to get the chat tabs back.

This happens if you left the chat window open an another idle device/browser/tab. You need to open the idle tab, close or minimize the window and you should be able to access the chat properly.
There's a confirmed report on this issue already which will hopefully resolve all such issues.
