Circumcision is tradition in the US due to Dr. Kelloggs (yes the cornflakes guy). He did this in the name of Christianity in which, like many other religions, sex is viewed as an activity that should solely be done to reproduce, not to receive pleasure. Being circumcised almost always reduces the pleasure from sex which is also the main reason for doing it (besides today in the US where you are likely to be a victim of bullying since Americans have some sort of fetish for it (see Colletes comment in this thread lol).

Kelloggs also tried procedures on females in order to reduce their pleasure from sex, this involved applying pure carbolic acid to the clitoris, but this procedure never really caught on as a trend.

Performing circumcision for any reason besides the few medical reasons (e.g phimosis) or trying to reason with the ethics of it by claiming it's cleaner or any of that bs is evil and people should know better. I cannot fathom why anyone would force a healthy infant baby to become a patient and undergo surgery for no real reason.

In my home country, the debate mostly relies on protecting minorities, but is close to being the first country in the world to ban the practice. In the US the situation is entirely different and will require a lot of effort to change.
